Masseria Petrarolo
A farmhouse turned luxury vacation rental, Masseria Petrarolo in Puglia combines rustic warmth with elegance. Nine bedrooms in the villa and pool house are set in olive and citrus groves.
Pugliese architecture with modern touches and an infusion of Moroccan colours give Villa Campi a very special feel.
How would you describe Villa Campi in a nutshell?
Villa Campi is a unique property that comprises an old water tower and a historic chapel. They are connected by wonderful gardens full of Mediterranean plants, fruit orchards and an olive grove. From the property, there are beautiful views across a Pugliese plateau with its patchwork of fields, vineyards and charming towns.
What is the story behind Villa Campi, what was your inspiration to create it?
When we purchased the property, it consisted of the existing tower structure with a storage area, all set in the middle of an olive grove. We liked that it was near our other property, Villa dell’Alto, and that we could develop it to create two completely separate homes. They could be rented independently or together for events and weddings, creating a total of eight bedrooms, two swimming pools and 15 hectares of open space.
How would you describe the atmosphere and the interior design of Villa Campi?
The atmosphere of the house is very relaxed while its vibe and style are Mediterranean. It combines Pugliese architectural elements with minimal, modern touches and an infusion of Moroccan colours to give the place a very special feel.
The house is composed of two structures, which are positioned 25 yards from one other.
In the old water tower is a kitchen and a living room on the ground floor, plus a bathroom and a wraparound portico with lots of lounging areas and an alfresco dining space. Accessed via an outdoor staircase is the upper floor, which has a queen-size bed and a bathroom with a soaking tub.
Separated by a beautiful garden is the old chapel with its cathedral ceilings. From this, we have carved out a king-size bedroom and a large bathroom. The house is all about lounging and taking in the beauty of the vistas and the surrounding gardens.
We accept children of all ages but there are some stairs and drops that parents need to be aware of.
Nestled within Villa Campi’s citrus grove is a beautiful pool with views across the valley and a great gazebo with hammocks. The pool is 4x5 metres and isn’t heated, although it is usually warm enough to swim in by May.
We offer a customized concierge service that includes scheduling a house chef, cooking classes, wine tours and boat tours, as well as airport transfers and private drivers.
We provide bikes for sightseeing in the surrounding countryside, which is patch-worked with agricultural fields, vineyards, olive groves and abandoned masserie. We can also organize wine tours and tastings at some of the nearby vineyards, which are among the best in Italy!
The crystal clear waters of the Ionian Sea are 25 minutes away while the beaches of the Adriatic coastline are just 15 minutes by car. I’d also highly recommend visiting the city of Lecce with its Baroque architecture, history and nightlife.
Villa Campi is located just 15 minutes north of the Baroque city of Lecce and is surrounded by countryside. It is very private but also near lots of services and restaurants, with the closest around five minutes’ drive from the property. The location is ideal for tasting some of Puglia’s best wine and visiting both the Ionian Sea (25 minutes away) and the Adriatic Sea (15 minutes away). There are artistic towns and cities all around us and the Pugliese food is to die for!
The climate in Puglia is so wonderful that any time of the year has its charm. I love April and May when all the fields are a profusion of flowers, and October and November for the olive harvest.
