An introduction to Villa Fluggi

How would you describe Villa Fluggi in a nutshell?

Villa Fluggi is a legacy of the 1960s in Obermais, which is the most beautiful part of Merano in South Tyrol. It’s nestled in a secluded part of town where you can find plenty of peace while still being easily connected to the heart of the city. Whether it is a private couple’s escape, a family holiday with children or a business trip — Villa Fluggi keeps its doors open to everyone at any time of the year.

What is the story behind Villa Fluggi and what was the inspiration to open it?

We were invited to a party hosted by Tyler Brûlé at the villa and fell in love with it. We saw a good opportunity to connect the property with the Miramonti hotel, offering our guests a casual holiday with family or friends at the villa, as well as a full-service stay at the Miramonti.

How would you describe the atmosphere and the interior design of Villa Fluggi?

Villa Fluggi is an exclusive retreat that provides our guests with a refuge from everyday life. While it is unique and special, it still feels like home. The design is very bright and inviting to create a "feel good" atmosphere and will particularly appeal to fans of retro design. It’s the 60s meets modern living.

In addition to classics, such as the Thonet chairs in the dining room, and exclusively manufactured, vintage-style pieces from today, you will find several mid-century design gems throughout the villa. Many of the pieces come from the alpine region and have been curated over several years. Not only are they witnesses to a well-lived life but temporary companions that create space for experiences.

For example, there’s a chandelier (found at a flea market) that was designed by the Viennese glass manufacturer, Lobmeyr. We also have a custom-made bar cabinet built from oak and marble that was created by the internationally renowned South Tyrolean designer Harry Thaler. In summary, timeless architecture and cosy shapes are the hallmarks of Villa Fluggi.

To you personally, what is so special about Villa Fluggi?

Villa Fluggi’s location in one of the most beautiful parts of Merano is what makes it so special, with the area being very quiet while still within easy access to shopping facilities. It has been renovated true to its original appearance and immediately transports you back to the 1960s. The house radiates peace — you want to take your shoes off right away — and there’s enough space to retreat as a family or as a group of friends.

What do you particularly like about this part of South Tyrol?

Merano captivates with its elegant cityscape, which is characterised by lush, green spaces, stately villas and magnificent buildings. Particularly special is Obermais where Villa Fluggi is located. To this day, the place embodies a special combination of openness and quality of life. Anyone who has visited will attest to the unique flair of the city.

Villa Fluggi’s philosophy for good service is that you do not see it, you feel it. It is the atmosphere in which memories are formed — a vase of tulips on arrival, the smell of fresh coffee wafting through the property in the morning or making the decision whether to open the Lagrein or the Gewürztraminer from the wine cellar.

Privacy and tranquility are our top priorities. The living rooms, bathrooms and toilets are cleaned once a week while the bedrooms are treated as private rooms and are only cleaned on request.

If guests feel the need for a freshly tapped beer on a warm summer evening, no problem! They can simply pour their own beer from the tap! If they would like meals prepared, a chef can be organised on request to create a three-course lunch or dinner. We’re also happy to provide breakfast provisions if guests desire.

When it comes to relaxation, guests can enjoy the Finnish sauna in the garden whenever they want. The operation is simple and wood is supplied. If they prefer to jump into a pool after the sauna, they are welcome to visit the Miramonti Boutique Hotel in Hafling where they can enjoy our large wellness facility, which features three different saunas, an infinity pool and an onsen. Massages and body treatments can also be booked there. We provide city bikes and e-bikes for guests wanting to explore Merano on two wheels or go cycling along the sunny trails of the Burggrafenamt.

If there are any other requests — a favourite newspaper, flowers for the breakfast table, a nanny service for the little ones, guided hiking tours or yoga lessons — we can fulfil them.

From the high mountains to the alpine views and the apple strudel — there are so many reasons to love South Tyrol. The old town of Merano boasts great architectural works of art, such as the Merano Kurhaus and the Teatro Puccini di Merano. For art lovers, there is the museum Kunst Meran where changing exhibitions can be admired every month.

From Merano, you can easily reach various hiking trails in a short amount of time and there are several cycling routes to explore. In winter, Merano 2000 is among the nearby ski areas and offers downhill runs, cross-country skiing and toboggan trails. As I mentioned, there’s good shopping in central Merano and the gardens of Castel Trauttmansdorff are a must-see with their colourful flowers.

A 10-minute walk from Villa Fluggi is Pur Südtirol Genussmarkt, which is a great place to pick up unique, local souvenirs. For relaxation, you can’t go past the Spa @ MIRAMONTI Boutique Hotel (which is 10 minutes by car) and I’d highly recommend a meal at the upmarket Miil Restaurant.

The location of Villa Fluggi

Villa Fluggi is located in the district of Obermais, which is around five minutes walk from the heart of Merano. There are countless alleys to explore and unique shops, with a highlight being the Monocle Shop at Merano or Pur Südtirol where you can pick up South Tyrol souvenirs for your loved ones. When it comes to eating, we recommend freshly baked croissants from the bakery “Forno” in the morning and a candlelight dinner at Restaurant Sissi, followed by a nightcap at the Rossini cocktail bar.

When is the best time to visit South Tyrol?

Whether you want to enjoy the Mediterranean climate in the summer months, the stunning golden colours of the autumn or winter’s snowy wonderland, Merano can be visited at any time of the year and never feels sleepy.
