An introduction to Villa Kaltern Piccola

How would you describe Villa Kaltern Piccola in a nutshell?

In Kaltern, a charming Alpine village in South Tyrol, modern Villa Kaltern Piccola is one of two luxury villa rentals. This unique jewel combines contemporary comforts with an architectural past and a traditional village setting. Villa Kaltern Piccola is the smaller of the two villas and set into a soothing Mediterranean garden with sunbeds, a barbecue station, and a herb garden. Villa Kaltern Piccola sits on the bottom end of the property, while Villa Kaltern Grande is at the top. That way both houses face different directions, ensuring privacy for each group of guests.

Please tell us about the interior design and general atmosphere.

Our idea was for the two villas to be turned into luxury rentals that exude a cosy atmosphere, with warm colours, lots of Italian influences, and a mixture of Mediterranean and Gothic Renaissance style. That is exactly the kind of environment one will find in Kaltern and the south of South Tyrol as well. The architect we worked with put great emphasis on the villas’ interior designs as well as bringing in custom-made furniture, either local or from Italy. We had also consulted an artist in regards to colours. Both of them had worked together before and did a wonderful job with Villa Kaltern Grande and modern Villa Kaltern Piccola.

To you personally, what do you think is so special about the villa?

The location of Villa Kaltern Piccola is one of the things that make it so special. The view is amazing and even though we are centrally located, it still feels away from any town hustle and bustle. For those guests who enjoy preparing their own meals, they can easily walk to town and buy the best local produce without having to go far. The Mediterranean garden with its beautiful, quiet and private atmosphere is also wonderful.

What was your inspiration to rent the villas?

We have always loved special places and beautiful furniture and therefore wanted to create something uniquely charming. When we had the opportunity to buy this property, we realized that we liked the city centre, but with a quiet atmosphere. Together we decided to give it a try for the next 10 to 15 years and see how guests receive the villas.

Are there a couple of restaurants within walking distance that you would recommend?

We have some pizzerias close by, which are quite nice and offer good, local food. The restaurants in the centre are moderate in price and are often favoured by any families that stay with us. The restaurants that are more elegant can be found further away from the city centre. There are Michelin starred restaurants in some of the neighbouring villages as well.

South Tyrol is a small province but has so much to offer to those who come to experience it. Of course, many of our guests spend lots of time at the villa, enjoying its amenities and beautiful surroundings. For those who want to venture out, there are several options. It is a region that is perfect for being active. Guests can go swimming in the lake, go hiking in the Alps or go on cycling trips. Within only one hour they’ll be in the midst of spectacular ski resorts.

Also in regard to arts and culture, there is plenty to explore close by. Bolzano is only 15 kilometres away and can be reached by a 15-minute bus drive. We recommend visiting Messner Mountain Museum, which is one of the most famous museums there. Merano with its lovely gardens is also not far, only 30 kilometres. A typical Italian town to visit would be Trento, which is about 40 kilometres away. All these towns are highly recommended and perfect for a day trip away from the villa.

The location of Villa Kaltern Piccola

Villa Kaltern Piccola is located on the southern side of Kaltern’s town centre. Within only a short walk from the villa the village has lots of choices to offer as Kaltern is in a region where Austrian and Italian culture meets. This can be seen and felt everywhere. As a wine town it also prides itself on culinary specialties and has lots of places to taste different wines. The farmer’s market that happens once a week offers fresh, regional produce that is ideal if guests want to cook at the villa.

Kaltern is located right next to the mountains, which makes it the ideal spot for taking lovely hikes and engaging in other mountainous activities, such as snowshoeing in the winter. A cable car can take you up 1,400 meters above sea level to a small ski resort at the top, which caters to children who are learning to ski. At the same time, southern South Tyrol is at about 400-500 meters above sea level, so that the climate and its vegetation is very Mediterranean, warm and sunny.

When is the best time to visit South Tyrol?

In South Tyrol, all seasons have something unique to offer! During spring everything is turning green. Lots of our guests come for the apple blossoms and enjoy taking cycling tours through the hills and orchards. Summer is of course the best time to go swimming in the lake and partaking in water sports. There are actual feasts and wine tastings happening in the villages and every Thursday evening all the shops stay open so people can enjoy the evenings there. For those who enjoy the smells and sights of autumn, harvest time is absolutely wonderful. During fall guests can help harvest wine and chestnuts, take long walks and observe the changing of the colours. Then there is winter, which is excellent for any mountain activities such as skiing, sledding, snowshoeing and the likes. Both villas have their own saunas where guests can relax. There’s a very nice Christmas market in town and all sorts of wonderful holiday markets to visit in the nearby area.
