Masseria Petrarolo
A farmhouse turned luxury vacation rental, Masseria Petrarolo in Puglia combines rustic warmth with elegance. Nine bedrooms in the villa and pool house are set in olive and citrus groves.
We wanted it to exude a simple beauty, with just enough “chic” to feel pleasant and authentic.
How would you describe Villa Ostuni in a nutshell?
Ideal for a weekend away, a vacation or a break from everyday life, Villa Ostuni is a whitewashed house surrounded by a sprawling olive grove near Ostuni. It evokes peace and subtle luxury within an authentic Italian setting. We welcome guests to feel at home, kick off their shoes and take a deep breath.
What is the story behind Villa Ostuni, what was your inspiration to create it?
The idea was to create a place that is both relaxing and inspiring — a place of comfort, lightness and the pure joy of life. We wanted it to exude a simple beauty, with just enough “chic” to feel pleasant and authentic. It is characterised by many small details that come together to create a complete experience where traditional Apulia meets urban lifestyle.
How would you describe the atmosphere and the interior design of Villa Ostuni?
Casual, light, chic and cosy. It doesn’t have a rigid interior design concept, but rather, a sensitivity for the place and the right materials. There are traditional sandstone vaults in harmony with light wooden floors — a novelty in southern Italy.
Light colours dominate, with shades of beige and brown in various nuances conveying lightness and comfort. The choice of furnishings and accessories from different countries creates a harmonious mix. Not a single piece seeks attention; everything plays together.
To you personally, what is so special about Villa Ostuni?
Villa Ostuni is an oasis where guests can feel at home, breathe deeply and recharge – it’s a place of deceleration that instantly captivates and won’t let go. It’s created by people for people who can feel and appreciate exactly this.
The experience begins when you enter through the wrought-iron gate. Lavender, rosemary and ancient olive trees form a welcoming committee while white limestone paves the way to the courtyard. Here, you’ll find lemon and mandarin trees, along with the characteristic prickly pear cactus — as emblematic of Apulia as trulli and orecchiette.
In the courtyard basin is a sculpture created by a local artist that invites you to pause. Its title, “The Weight of Nothingness,” gives a hint of the value of the days to come.
Continuing on, you enter the casa via the living area, which features a unique star-vaulted ceiling made of light sandstone. There’s an open-plan kitchen (crafted by a local carpenter and fitted with high-quality appliances), a lounge with an open fireplace and a spacious dining area.
In each of the two wings, there are three bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms – all different in size but bright and full of details. Every room can be accessed from both inside and outside.
A door leads onto the terrace with its dining and lounge areas, where you’ll be greeted by the turquoise waters of the 13-metre-long infinity pool (complete with a large “beach” area). The outdoor kitchen and bar (along with the lounge and dining area) are all designed in the trendy “Ibiza meets Ostuni” style – light, casual and full of zest for life.
Starting in March 2025, a yoga pavilion and whirlpool will also be added within the 1.4-hectare olive grove.
Upon request, the Villa Ostuni team can clean the villa daily or just once a week, stock the fridge with local delicacies, provide great local tips or organise private tours in the surrounding area. Massages, airport transfers, a fine selection of wines – everything is possible.
For those who wish, Chef Angelo can spoil them with a refined Apulian dinner, brunch or fantastic cocktails. Wine tasting and yoga classes can also be arranged on request, as can bike tours and a vintage car tour with Gigi in a Fiat 500 (1970).
The villa also features an EV charging station directly powered by the photovoltaic system. Amenities within the casa include soaps and creams from traditional Italian manufacturers, kimonos to wear around the house and postcards for use on-site. We also provide beach bags, hats, umbrellas and yoga mats.
FEATURES
Torre Pozzella is my favourite beach, with its crystal clear waters, pure nature and combination of sandy and rocky coves. It’s 15 minutes' drive from Villa Ostuni.
Villa Ostuni is located five kilometres from Ostuni — the famous “White City” of Apulia. It is set in the middle of an olive grove, yet close enough to all amenities, the beach, airports and points of interest.
I love the vastness, the abundance of olive trees and cacti, and the simple architecture of the white houses. There’s a mix of East and West and it’s within close proximity to two seas: the Ionian and the Adriatic. I also like its accessibility via two airports: Brindisi and Bari.
Surrounded by millions of olive trees, with their silvery olive-green leaves and the red earth, Ostuni expresses the special power of nature throughout the year.
In my opinion, October is the best time to visit. When Central Europe is becoming cold, you can extend your summer with just a 1½-hour flight.
And, of course, summer (from mid-June to late August) is wonderful when the beaches and cities are lively and full. While this vibrancy is never far away and can be experienced anytime, Villa Ostuni is the perfect place to retreat and an oasis of tranquility.
