An introduction to White Cube

Please describe White Cube in a nutshell.

White Cube is an intimate space that’s open to its surroundings. It’s unique in that you have your own privacy and a garden while being in the historic centre of a medieval village in this wonderful unspoiled part of Puglia.

What is the story and inspiration behind White Cube?

I’ve known Puglia for a long time as I used to come here when I was younger. It’s less developed than other parts of Italy and open, with a sense of freedom. So we decided that it was the ideal place to gather in the summer months with our friends and family who are spread all over Europe.

The original block of land we found was not enormous and there were challenges in trying to get the design brief exactly right. We knew that we wanted five bedrooms and six bathrooms, as well as big, open spaces. But everything else with the design happened spontaneously. I’d describe the architecture as timeless. White Cube fits perfectly into its surroundings without being too subdued — it has character.

How would you describe the atmosphere at White Cube?

Sometimes when I’m on the tower rooftop and the sun is setting over the old village, I can hear the church bell ringing, the voices of kids playing, and the seagulls — it feels like being in Tunisia or Morocco.

White Cube rooms & rates

White Cube is comprised of two blocks. The main block features the open-plan kitchen and living room, with two enormous sliding doors that disappear into the walls. It feels like there is no boundary between the inside and outside, giving the space a sense of freedom. The tower rises above and houses two bedrooms topped by a roof terrace. There’s another roof terrace above the living room that’s lower in height but still elevated enough to enjoy the surroundings.

In the other block is the master bedroom and two smaller bedrooms, so, potentially, you could comfortably accommodate two families (and a nanny), with each enjoying their own privacy. Each of the bedrooms has an ensuite bathroom and there is an additional guest bathroom.

In the courtyard is a swimming pool, a football table, outdoor furnishings, as well as a barbecue area. There’s also an additional garden with an Orangerie behind the tower.

The coastline is very beautiful, with lots of different beaches to explore. Just five minutes’ drive from White Cube is a rocky cove with several umbrellas and an amazing restaurant. The water is incredible and you can watch the locals diving off the rocks. Around 15 minutes away is Tricase Porto, which is a special place with just a few villas. Lido Marinelli is more popular with tourists and has great infrastructure and food while on the other side of the peninsula is Lido Elite — a beautiful beach that offers plenty of privacy and amazing food. It’s important to keep in mind that Basso Salento is very popular and the beaches can get crowded. So if you want the privacy of a beach resort, you need to book in advance.

Away from the coast, some of the historic villages are also worth exploring, such as Specchia and Galatina, which has been nicknamed “Little Lecce” for its Baroque architecture. I’d also recommend Otranto, which has an incredible history associated with its Ottoman invasion. On the other side of the coast is Gallipoli and Lecce is definitely worth visiting for many reasons.

The location of White Cube

White Cube is located in the town of Gagliano del Capo on the Basso Salento — a peninsula that’s almost a region of its own. It’s surrounded by water and feels like being on an island, with both coastlines reachable within 15 to 20 minutes by car. The coastlines are very different from one another. On the eastern side are rocky coves and crystal clear waters that are ideal for swimming and diving. For me, this is one of the most beautiful coastlines in Italy. On the other side, you’ll find white, sandy beaches, which are beautiful but often more crowded. There are several beach resorts here that are perfect for families with kids as they have all the facilities you need.

Lecce is the biggest city in the region and is around an hour away while Santa Maria di Leuca is just 10 minutes’ drive. One of the hippest hotels in the world, Palazzo Daniele, is just around the corner from White Cube and there are great restaurants within walking distance of the property. In the welcome brochure, we also list some amazing restaurants that are just a short drive from the property.

When is the best time to visit Puglia?

August can be very crowded but it becomes much less intense in June and July. September is also very beautiful.
