How would you describe A Sociedade Rural in a nutshell?
A Sociedade Rural is a quiet rural retreat shaped by nature, a place where time slows, silence gains texture, and the essentials regain their meaning. It is not simply somewhere to stay, but a way of being: grounded, simple, and deeply connected to the land.
What is the story behind A Sociedade Rural? What was your inspiration to create it?
The project unfolded gradually, guided as much by intuition as by the land itself. More than twenty years ago, we began restoring this place through organic and regenerative farming. Working closely with the soil taught us patience, humility, and an appreciation for the quiet beauty that emerges when nature leads the process.
Alongside this, our background in design and editorial work nurtured a sensitivity for understated aesthetics — atmospheres that resonate gently rather than seek attention. Over time, we felt a strong desire to bring these worlds together, creating a small rural “society” where people, plants, agriculture, and hospitality coexist with intention.
A Sociedade Rural is the meeting point of these paths: a return to what is essential, a celebration of the land, and an invitation to rediscover the quieter pleasures of a life lived more slowly.
How would you describe the atmosphere and interior design of A Sociedade Rural?
The atmosphere is calm, tactile, and understated, shaped by natural light, soft colours, and materials that breathe. Indoors, the palette reflects the surrounding landscape: sun-washed whites, muted greens, raw wood, and limewashed walls.
Nothing seeks attention. Instead, the spaces follow the rhythm of the place itself, expressing a form of quiet luxury defined by subtraction rather than excess. By removing distraction and noise, what remains is comfort, warmth, and an honest sense of home, where nature continues to be present in every room.
To you personally, what is so special about A Sociedade Rural?
There is a calmness here that cannot be staged: the hush of early mornings, the scent of wildflowers in spring, the stillness of the hills, and the honesty of the landscape. Guests often arrive carrying the noise of daily life and leave with something softer — a renewed sense of presence and attentiveness to small things.
A Sociedade Rural is special because it reminds us that beauty often appears when everything unnecessary is removed. It is a place that honours time, land, and the quiet joy of simply being.
What do you particularly like about this part of the Alentejo?
Marvão lies in the Alto Alentejo, a higher and greener part of the region shaped by the Serra de São Mamede mountains. The altitude brings cooler temperatures, fresher air, and a remarkable diversity of flora and fauna. Even in summer, the landscape remains lush and shaded by oak and chestnut trees. This wilder, more temperate character gives the area a distinct rhythm and makes it especially pleasant during the warmer months.
