An introduction to Airstream

How would you describe Airstream Petrarolo in a nutshell?

The Airstream is a beautifully renovated 1972 Airstream Overlander with a sumptuous double bedroom with en-suite wet room shower and toilet. It can comfortably accommodate 2 adults and up to 3 smaller children.

The Airstream has a fully fitted kitchen with basin, gas hob and oven grill, plus a fridge/freezer. Delicious meals can be eaten on the dining table inside, or outside al fresco style, in the shade of the sun or under the stars. There is also an outdoor BBQ.

The Airstream is set in a beautiful field overlooking the orange grove with stunning 160-degree views of the sea. Staying in a caravan is an experience that should be tried by everyone.

What is the story behind Airstream Petrarolo, what was your inspiration to create it?

I found the Airstream in North Dakota, USA, and brought it back to England to be fully renovated into a boutique stay experience in keeping with the design standards of our other properties. We wanted to retain all the gorgeous original exterior features of the original classic American camper caravan and yet bring the interiors up to boutique standards.

How would you describe the atmosphere and the interior design?

Traditional Airstreams from the 1970s have interiors that are typical of their era — our Airstream has been completely gutted and rebuilt to create bright, soft, spacious, welcoming spaces to sleep, eat and enjoy.

The curved ceilings, soft suede surfaces and natural wooden furniture create a serene sense of belonging and well-being.

Airstream rooms & rates

Arriving at the Airstream, you go through a private gateway then along a stone driveway around the pine plantation and into the field, where you have the site of the classic Airstream perched in the centre of a gorgeous field on elevated ground that has stunning views of the Adriatic coast some 6km away.

Entering the Airstream you come into the main living space where there is a curved fitted sofa with a dining table, which can be converted into the children’s bed.

The main living space is fitted with a Bose sound system and also has a kitchen. Off this living room, there is a walk-in ‘wet room’ style shower and toilet room. This shower room also has a connecting door to the master bedroom making it en-suite.

The master bedroom has a chest of drawers and a comfortable double bed with beautiful cotton bedsheets.

Coming out of the Airstream there is a large wooden decked area with outdoor dining table, sun loungers and BBQ. Plus a small 3m round dipping pool to cool off.

The location of the Airstream gives guests the chance to walk in the Lavender fields and enjoy the citrus grove of the Estate.

When renting the Airstream the standard service is a midweek housekeeping service. This can be upgraded to daily twice weekly. A baby cot and high chair can be provided on request.

The standard booking period is Saturday to Saturday. We can consider shorter bookings outside of the peak season.

Bicycles can be rented and delivered to the property for the period of your booking. Boat rentals and trips to any of the lido beach clubs can be arranged.

The Airstream Petrarolo has its own driveway entrance with parking space for up to 3 cars.

The Airstream is around 10-20 minutes from some beautiful beaches, so you are spoiled for choice. For anyone interested we can also book people onto boats for yachting excursions.

A day trip to Lecce, which is about a 50-minute drive, is fascinating for those interested in architecture. The trulli of the area, as well as the world-class caves, are fascinating to see as well. The hotel Masseria Torre Coccaro, which is about 25 mins away, has a fantastic underground spa built out of the natural caves that the farmers used to use.

Our guests can also drive a little north to visit a Norman castle, which was built by Frederic II when he was ruling this part of Puglia. The San Dominica golf club is nearby too.

When the summer season hits, the Italian beaches fill up but on weekdays and out of season they’re less crowded. Kite surfers prefer to use Capitola beach for their training. It’s fairly empty all the way up to the big season beginning in July.

The location of Airstream

The Airstream is located in the Puglian countryside surrounded by olive groves and vineyards at about 300 meters above sea level with a 160-degree view of the ocean.

The small town of Monopoli is six kilometers away, with a nice historical centre and everything you might need. We are about 15 mins from Capitolo beach with beachside restaurants and beach clubs that are a lot of fun in the summer. Lido Bambù with its powdery sand beach is 7km or 10 mins by car. There are fantastic restaurants in Monopoli or Polignano a Mare, which are 10km or 10-15 mins by car away.

Other towns, such as Alberobello, the historical town of trullis, is about 20 mins away. Cisternino, a hilltop town famous for its caves, is also close by. Ostuni is about 40 mins away, and we’re about an hour from Bari, which is where the Puglia airport is.

Further south from us, about a 40-minute drive, there’s a wonderful national park, the nature reserve Torre Guaceto, with a truly amazing beach.

When is the best time to visit Puglia?

During the summer you get all the glorious heat and sunshine that’s very typical of this part of southern Italy. With 300 days of sunshine per year, the air conditioning at the house comes in quite handy.

The peak season in Puglia doesn’t have a sense of being crowded. The beaches are the only places where you’ll notice that it’s busy. For guests who like to stay away from crowds, I can ensure them that they won’t be bothered by any of the business at the villa.

In spring, there are beautiful wildflowers in the fields. In fall, there’s a traditional festival at my house in September with a religious ceremony and a candlelit procession from the chapel in the house down to the Madonna. It’s a combination of a religious and a local community event, with food and the whole deal. It’s remarkably charming to be there during that time.
