Casa Leria
Nestled within an ecological reserve on the Pacific Coast of Oaxaca, Casa Leria is an architecturally-designed beachfront house that boasts amazing views and easy access to pristine beaches.
Puerto Escondido is known for its surf culture and is a great place for enjoying beach life.
What is the story behind Casa al Mar?
Casa al Mar is an incredible property set on an idyllic stretch of coastline near Puerto Escondido. This part of Oaxaca has evolved a uniquely Brutalist style of architecture, which is surprisingly in contrast to what life is all about down there. It’s located right next to the rolling Pacific Ocean, so you can hear the waves and feel the salt. You really feel as though you are part of nature.
How would you describe the atmosphere, architecture and interior design of Casa al Mar?
Casa al Mar was designed by Anonymous Architects, with local materials and regional craftsmanship techniques heavily featured. For example, the living room wall has been built with lots of holes in it to naturally cool the space. The property features monolithic elements that are reminiscent of Mesoamerican architecture and it is decorated with Mexican sculptures and wood carvings.
Casa al Mar is part of a gated community and enjoys magnificent sunsets. On one side are neighbours, but you can’t really see them when you’re there, so there is a wonderful sense of privacy.
At the centre of the property is a minimalist-style living space with a huge table, a bar and a seating area that looks out across a 30-metre-long pool. Here you’ll find a sunken bar, a jacuzzi tub and sun loungers that are almost immersed in the water. This overlooks a beach that feels almost completely private.
The layout of the bedrooms is simple but spacious — all of them are huge. There are two master suites that connect to private terraces overlooking the ocean and all feature private hammocks. The two bedrooms that don’t overlook the ocean have internal patios.
All of the rooms have super comfortable beds with hand-woven and embroidered Oaxacan linens. It’s all very high quality. Most of the bedrooms have either one king-size bed or two queens and there’s a kids’ room with two sets of bunks.
Off the main living area is a TV/games room, so the house works well for families with kids. There’s so much space, so everyone can have their own area. On the beach are sunloungers where you can relax during the day and these are also illuminated at night.

AMENITIES
Puerto Escondido is known for its surf culture and is a great place for enjoying beach life. There’s a long, sandy beach in the town that’s lined with cafes serving healthy breakfast bowls and smoothies, as well as some great seafood restaurants. I’d highly recommend tasting the oysters straight off the rocks at Playa Agua Blanca.
Puerto Escondido also has quite a nightlife scene and the sunsets are amazing over the Pacific Ocean.
Casa al Mar is around 10 minutes’ drive from the most happening part of Puerto Escondido. If you pick up a hire car at the airport, you never need to drive more than 20 minutes to do anything.
