Casa Leria
Nestled within an ecological reserve on the Pacific Coast of Oaxaca, Casa Leria is an architecturally-designed beachfront house that boasts amazing views and easy access to pristine beaches.
It’s like being at a retreat. It’s very calm with panoramic views of the ocean.
How would you describe Casa Aragón in a nutshell?
Casa Aragón is 970-square-metre house overlooking the Pacific Ocean on Mexico’s Oaxacan coast, partway between Zipolite and San Agustinillo. Surrounded by nature and a garden filled with endemic plants, every detail has been carefully considered to provide a welcoming atmosphere.
The property features an open-plan living room, a fully-equipped kitchen and a beachfront infinity pool, plus four bedrooms that can accommodate up to 12 guests. Two have king-size beds and ocean views while the others have two queen-size beds and views towards the mountain.
Please describe the atmosphere of Casa Aragón.
It’s like being at a retreat. It’s very calm and with panoramic views of the ocean. From Casa Aragón’s elevated spot, guests can enjoy refreshing coastal breezes that flow throughout the property, enhancing the sense of relaxation and serenity.
We have neighbours but they are not that close — it’s just the ocean and nature in the immediate surroundings. The beach is very pristine and you can walk for ages. Early in the morning, it’s nice to go swimming or paddle boarding. Sometimes it gets rougher later in the day.
The house, with its 970 m² of space, features a charming open living room, a fully equipped kitchen, a solarium, and a beachfront pool. Surrounded by lush nature and a garden filled with endemic plants, every detail has been carefully considered to provide a welcoming and refreshing atmosphere.
The common areas, both indoor (108 m²) and outdoor (105 m²), enhance the experience, as do our two independent modules housing our four bedrooms. Two of these rooms, with sea views, have King size beds, while the other two, with mountain views, each have two Queen size beds. Casa Aragón is a haven of comfort, ensuring a restful retreat after a day of exploration.
Let’s walk through. As soon as you arrive, you’ll see a garden and a pergola with space for two or three cars. Upstairs leads to the main floor with a guest bathroom and, on the right-hand side, is the breakfast bar and kitchen. In the middle of the house is the living room and 10-seater dining table with views of the ocean. On the left-hand side is a small interior garden and in front is the triangular pool (20 metres in length and 1.5 metres deep). There are sun loungers, tables and umbrellas on the edge of the pool.
Steps lead up from here to one of the master bedrooms, which has a king-size bed with floating nightstands, as well as charging outlets and a safe. In the closet is an espresso machine, water and a mini fridge, plus there is a day bed designed for two and a private seating area. Outside the master bedroom is a terrace with deck chairs and hammocks overlooking the ocean.
Downstairs leads to one of the double bedrooms — it doesn’t have a balcony but it’s huge, with two queen-size beds, a chair and a closet. There is a full bathroom and from the shower, you have glimpses of the sea. The other double bedroom (with two queen-size beds) has a bathroom and a balcony facing the mountain.
One more floor up is the second master bedroom, which also faces the ocean. It has a full bathroom (the shower has water glimpses) and a king-size bed, plus a closet and a small seating area. On the balcony, there is a hammock where guests can relax overlooking the water.
The kitchen is fully equipped and comes with basic supplies, such as olive oil, spices and rice/pasta. Oaxacan coffee is included in the rates, as is breakfast featuring fruit, juice, granola and local honey. After booking, we provide guests with a list of the various breakfast options they can choose from, such as quesadillas, omelettes and pancakes.
We also work with an Oaxacan chef who prepares delicious local meals for lunch and dinner (on request). She always makes a lot, more than guests can eat! She knows what is in season and connects with local fishermen in the area to get the best seafood possible.
Housekeeping services are provided from 7 am to 1 pm daily, beginning with the preparation of breakfast and including the cleaning of rooms. As part of our commitment to environmental care, sheets and towels are changed every five days (although they can be changed more frequently on request) and the air-conditioning operates from 10 pm to 7 am.
Additionally, laundry services are available for a surcharge and we have a maintenance person responsible for taking care of the pool and garden.
All of the linens at Casa Aragón are 100% Indian cotton while the toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, gel, hand wash, mosquito repellant and body lotion) are vegan, cruelty-free and biodegradable. An iron and ironing board are available on request and we have hairdryers in all of the bathrooms. For guests’ convenience, we offer Starlink internet.
We can also arrange for spa services at the house, such as body wraps, facials, massages, manicures and pedicures. If you don’t want to go to one of the nearby yoga studios, we can arrange for private classes at Casa Aragon. Surf lessons can also be facilitated, although they are held at another beach, around 5-7 minutes’ drive away.
There are lots of tours in the area that can be booked with us, such as horseback riding in the river, as well as private transportation from the airports in Santa María Huatulco (HUX), Puerto Escondido (PXM) and Oaxaca City (OAX).
I’d highly recommend trying some of the local Oaxacan cuisine, especially the seafood, or you can learn about local fishing traditions while catching your own. Mezcal is becoming increasingly popular and Oaxaca is one of only five places that can officially make it, so it’s interesting to visit one of the local distilleries. The chocolate here is also very good.
All along the coast, there is great surf, as well as several yoga studios offering daily classes. If you’re interested, you can also try a local temazcal (sweat lodge).
In Masunte, there is a turtle museum and depending on the season, you can help to release new hatchlings or go snorkelling on the nearby coral reef. Dolphin and whale-watching boat trips are also available and some evenings, you can take a bioluminescent swim under the stars.
We encourage our guests to support local businesses, such as La Casita del Chocolate, a family-run spot where you can taste local cocoa and mole or learn to prepare traditional drinks. Piña Palmera Centro de Atención Infantil is a nonprofit dedicated to the inclusion of people with disabilities and they run affordable craft workshops in pottery and woodwork. Just five minutes away, El Telar de Mayra offers a glimpse into the Oaxacan textile artistry and is the perfect place to shop for handcrafted items like cushions and bedspreads.
Casa Aragón is perched on a hill overlooking Playa Aragón, which is less than five minutes away on foot. It is a secluded, untouched beach offering a perfect escape into nature’s tranquility. This hidden gem is known for its golden sands, calm ambiance and clear ocean waters — ideal for those seeking a peaceful retreat away from the crowds.
Five minutes’ drive will take you to both Zipolita and San Agustinillo while Mazunte is around 10 minutes away. San Agustinillo is very famous for its surf and there are a lot of restaurants and night clubs there if you want to party.
Renting a car is a good idea if you want to explore the area, as we aren’t close to public transport. Otherwise, we can help to arrange taxis to get around.
November to April is the high season and the best time to visit Zipolite, Mazunte and San Agustinillo. During these months, the Oaxaca coast enjoys dry, sunny weather with lower humidity and pleasant temperatures, averaging between 25-30°C (77-86°F) during the day. This season is also known for its clear waters and calm waves, ideal for swimming and snorkelling.
Summer on the Oaxaca coast, from May to October, has its own charm with lush, vibrant landscapes thanks to the occasional rain. During the rainy season, showers are often brief, refreshing and usually in the late afternoon or evening, leaving mornings and early afternoons ideal for beach time. July, August and September are typically the wettest months.
During this time, the ocean is warm, making it perfect for surfing, and the beaches tend to be quieter as there are fewer tourists around. Plus, summer sunsets are especially stunning, with dramatic colours that light up the sky over the Pacific Ocean!
