An introduction to Casa Montisi

What is the story behind Casa Montisi, what was your inspiration to create it?

We were looking for a house for our family in the village of Montisi. As soon as we saw it, we understood that we had found what we were looking for. We tried to maintain the soul of the house, removing more than adding and giving the house what it "asked for" and the decided to open it to guests.

How would you describe the atmosphere and the interior design of Casa Montisi?

It is a typical bourgeois village house and very welcoming. We have tried to combine pieces from various eras (of both Italian and Spanish design) with some of the original furniture.

To you personally, what is so special about Casa Montisi?

Certainly the light is splendid and unusual for a house within a Tuscan town. It also has lots of comfortable, cosy and welcoming spaces where you can spend beautiful time with family and friends. I also think the possibility of going grocery shopping, and having a coffee or dinner all on foot (without having to take the car) is special.

The area is rich in historical and natural treasures, most of which can be reached within 30 minutes by car/vespa or a little longer by bike.

For convenience, I have organised them into four "routes", which intersect and overlap one another.

  1. The historical-architectural route You can travel from the medieval village of San Giovanni d'Asso and the castles of Trequanda to Montalcino with its splendid panorama surrounded by vineyards and historic villas. This route takes in the Abbey of Sant’Antimo, Chiusure (on the Crete gullies) and the Abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore, as well as San Quirico d'Orcia and its Italian gardens.

Guests can visit the Collegiate Church and thermal water square of Bagno Vignoni, the "ideal city of the Renaissance”, Pienza (sought after by Pope Enea Silvio Piccolomini), and Montepulciano with its Duomo and Temple of San Biagio.

The historic cities of Siena, Arezzo and Perugia can also be reached in less than an hour by car and Florence is just over an hour from the property.

  1. The thermal route This route takes in the free pools of the "White Whale" in Bagni San Filippo (40 minutes) and Bagno Vignoni. The scenic drive to reach them is wonderful in any season.

  2. The naturalistic route Crete and Valdorcia are full of wonderful routes that can be done on foot or by bike, allowing you to immerse yourself in a natural world that is still wild at times.

  3. The food and wine itinerary The area in which Montisi is located is rich in terms of wine, with Rosso and Brunello di Montalcino and Nobile di Montepulciano among the most renowned. Many of the local wines are ideally paired with Chianina meat (a characteristic breed of calves) or Cinta Senese pork, both of which feature in traditional dishes.

The location of Casa Montisi

Casa Montisi is located in Montisi, which is a sparsely inhabited village in the Italian province of Siena. The area is rich in historical and natural treasures, most of which can be reached within 30 minutes by car/vespa or a little longer by bike.

I like the authenticity of Montisi. Despite being in a tourist area, the villagers have a sense of community and regularly organise parties and dinners which are open to all. I also like the beauty of the surroundings and the calmness of the town. The area in which Montisi is located is iconic, with infinite landscapes that are sparsely inhabited but full of beauty.

Montisi is home to a grocery store, a wine shop and a florist, as well as two restaurants, a bar, a bakery and an ATM. A few kilometres away in Sinalunga, you’ll find a hardware store, supermarkets and a large clothing outlet.

When is the best time to visit Tuscany?

Due to fewer people and the pleasant climate, the best time to visit Montisi is from March to the end of June and from September to the end of November. In summer, it is hotter, but there is the possibility of enjoying parties, outdoor dining and concerts, including the Umbria Jazz Festival. Every season is splendid for the different colours of the Valdorcia countryside.
