An introduction to Il Palazzetto

How would you describe Il Palazzetto in a nutshell?

Il Palazzetto is an ancient family home set in the very heart of Venice — a place where every corner holds a memory. The house is the result of a long and meticulous restoration that prioritized comfort without compromising its original structure. We preserved the shapes, light, and colors of the past, reimagining them as living elements of the present. It’s a truly unique and authentic place — both timeless and unmistakably Venetian.

What is the story behind Il Palazzetto? What was your inspiration to create it?

Il Palazzetto is, first and foremost, our family home. Childhood memories inspired a careful restoration, where the colors, shapes, and objects of the past were woven into a new vision of the house. Every layer — whether architectural, decorative, or emotional — reflects a home in constant evolution, yet firmly rooted in its history. A close-knit family, a love story, an incredible architect, skilled artisans, and many friends have all contributed to making Il Palazzetto what it is today.

How would you describe the atmosphere and interior design of Il Palazzetto?

The house is quintessentially Venetian — complete with a water entrance, historic wall coverings, terrazzo alla veneziana floors, and polished marbles — yet it carries a bold Art Deco character. The original boiserie, the living room alcove, skylights, and kitchen are all preserved features from the early 20th century. You’ll find Byzantine capitals above the triple windows, 18th-century marbles, and decorative motifs from the 1920s and ’30s. Each detail contributes to the home’s layered story, a living tribute to Venetian artistry through the ages.

What makes Il Palazzetto so special to you personally?

It’s home. It’s a retreat suspended above water, a private stage above a magical city. Restoring Il Palazzetto felt like continuing a story that began long before us — adding a piece to Venice’s ever-evolving mosaic. To me, it’s a place where you realize that nothing more is needed: just the dance of light on ancient stone, the texture of time-worn fabrics, and the ever-shifting palette of the lagoon. I fall in love with it all over again, every time.

What’s your policy on children?

Children are absolutely welcome! Venice is a magical playground for little ones — whether it’s chasing pigeons in Piazza San Marco or watching glassblowers on Murano. We’re happy to recommend family-friendly activities and restaurants, and babysitting can be arranged upon request.

Il Palazzetto rooms & rates

Guests arrive via the traditional Porta d’Acqua — a private water entrance — where rare portoro and portovenere marbles welcome you. The grand staircase, adorned with floral stuccoes, leads to the first floor, where the main bedroom overlooks the Grand Canal and offers a first glimpse of the Rialto Bridge. The room is bathed in soft greys and framed by traditional rolled glass windows.

Nearby is a small sitting area paved with red tiles, a remnant of the original kitchen. From there, you enter what we call “La Barca” — once the service quarters, now reimagined as a refined retreat. Inspired by the elegance of Riva motorboats, this wing features two double bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms and wardrobes, plus a third bathroom with heated floors and a spacious shower.

On the second floor, an elegant foyer connects the main living areas. The Grand Salon opens to the outside through a classic three-mullioned Venetian window. The Art Deco style is preserved and enriched with restored alcoves and custom wall fabrics by Giovanni Vianello’s atelier, Venice’s most esteemed upholsterer. The wooden doors and inlays, dating to a 1940s renovation by Milanese architect Gio Ponti, were lovingly restored by Venetian craftsman Alessandro Macuz — also known as “El Lustrin.”

The terrazzo alla veneziana floors throughout the second floor were custom-made, playing with color and contrast to complement the wall décor. This is the heart of the home, where the family gathers for meals and relaxation.

The adjoining kitchen, with its black-and-white checkered floor, red wood cabinetry, and Carrara marble countertops, is a nod to architect Carlo Scarpa’s signature design style.

Then there’s the “Red Room” — preceded by a striking wardrobe handcrafted from painted wood, a masterpiece of Venetian cabinetry. The room itself is the most theatrical of all, cloaked in deep reds and filled with Baroque flair. It is paired with a luxurious bathroom featuring black marble, white tiles, dual sinks, and a freestanding tub.

Finally, the terrace. Flowing directly from the Salon, it offers sweeping, 180-degree views — from the iconic Rialto Bridge to the Casino at Palazzo Vendramin Calergi. It’s a rare vantage point in Venice, where the architecture and rhythm of the city unfold before your eyes.

Things to do in Venice

  • Art / Culture
  • Shopping / Markets
  • Wine tastings
  • Cooking classes
  • Massages / Treatments
  • Yoga classes
  • Boat trips

While we don’t organize on-site activities, our central location makes everything easily accessible. Guests can walk to the city’s main landmarks or hop on a vaporetto to explore the lagoon islands or spend a day on Lido’s beaches.

With advance notice, we can organize bespoke experiences — private boat excursions, wine tastings, artisan visits, and more. Let us know your interests, and we’ll help design your perfect Venetian experience.

Some of our highlights are:

  • Piazza San Marco and the Basilica – A stunning blend of Eastern and Western influences, this church is a masterpiece of art, architecture, and spirituality.
  • SS. Giovanni e Paolo Hospital – Just a short walk from Il Palazzetto, this hidden gem is both a working hospital and a marvel of Renaissance architecture. The contrast is surreal — marble and trompe-l’œil inside, boat ambulances docked outside.
  • The Venetian Arsenal – Once the heart of Venice’s naval power, its medieval shipyards and watchtowers still echo the stories of the Republic’s maritime might.

That said, the real magic of Venice lies in getting lost — wandering until you stumble upon a tiny trattoria or a cozy bacaro for an impromptu ombra (glass of wine). That’s when the city truly reveals itself.

The location of Il Palazzetto

Il Palazzetto is located directly on the Grand Canal, just steps from the Rialto Bridge and facing the historic Erberia market square. This is the heart of Venice, where the city's oldest district still pulses with life. You’re immersed in history and beauty the moment you arrive.

The ever-changing life on the Grand Canal is endlessly captivating — vaporetti and delivery boats brushing past gondolas and glossy wooden taxis. Just across the bridge is one of my favorite places: the fish and vegetable market. And because Venice is so compact, everything is within walking distance. Cannaregio, where Il Palazzetto is located, is full of hidden gems and less-traveled paths. I especially love the Fondamenta della Misericordia — it feels like the most authentic corner of the city.

Nearly everything in Venice is within walking distance, and the city is full of incredible restaurants. Some of our favorites include Il Paradiso Perduto for its lively ambiance, Bepi già 54 for authentic cicchetti, Da Fiore for refined Venetian dining, and Osteria Santa Marina for its intimate, local feel.

When is the best time to visit Venice?

Spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October) are ideal, with mild temperatures and fewer tourists. Spring brings colorful blooms and lively Easter traditions; autumn offers golden reflections on the canals and local wine festivals. In summer, the city comes alive with open-air events like the Redentore festival. Winter brings a quiet, poetic atmosphere — foggy mornings, Carnival costumes, and a haunting beauty you’ll never forget. Every season casts its own spell over Venice.
