How would you describe Monsieur Didot in a nutshell?
Monsieur Didot aspires to offer his guests a meaningful and memorable experience, one that is created with care, attention to detail and an emphasis on authenticity. He is influenced by the neighbourhood’s dynamism and culture, he respects the environment and cares for its protection and aims to make its guests feel that they are in a “home away from home”, offering them personalized care and a way to discover the city through the eyes of a local.
What’s your background and what was your inspiration to open Monsieur Didot?
Created and run by a group of friends, Monsieur Didot aspires to share an unknown side of the capital with guests by harmoniously combining the charm of the past with the amenities of the present.
The name is inspired by the Didot family who were French typewriters, publishers and booksellers and, more specifically, Firmin Didot, a pioneer in typewriting history, inventor of “stereotype” and creator of the famous font which carries his name.
This concept fits into the dynamic and “artistic” neighbourhood of Kolonaki, which once was the meeting place for writers and literary minds of a bygone era. Art, culture, books, typography is what inspires us. Monsieur Didot wishes that his guests will learn, explore, and become curious.
How would you describe the atmosphere and the interior design of Monsieur Didot?
The impressive neoclassical residence, which dates back to 1880 was restored respecting to the building’s history and came to life once more in September 2019.
Using traditional methods and natural materials, the team of designers succeeded in unveiling and showcasing some of the most impressive elements of the space, such as tall, hand-painted ceilings and vintage mosaics. At the same time, contemporary construction techniques provide a modern touch.
Monsieur Didot owes its name to a man of letters and arts. This is reflected in the interior design. Bookcases throughout the building, framed works by famous and not yet famous artists, portraits of influential people, handmade ceramics and custom-designed lighting have been introduced into the building’s fabric, encouraging contrast, a plurality of textures and shapes.
To you personally, what is so special about Monsieur Didot?
The same that is so special for Monsieur Didot’s guests: unique aesthetics, a relaxed atmosphere, a homely atmosphere, personalized care and support.
Please tell us about the food.
A stay at Monsieur Didot embraces a “your home away from home” philosophy with personalized service and tailor-made recommendations. The day always begins with a lavish homemade breakfast, which guests can enjoy in their room or on the rooftop during the summer months. Inspired by the traditional Greek diet, carefully selected organic ingredients from all over the country are transformed into a truly delicious start of the day. Guests may also opt for a quick snack from the “all day” menu, designed by the hotel’s consultant chef, or have a bottle of wine accompanied with assortments of Greek deli products.
Guests also have the opportunity to experience the art of food and wine pairing with a wine connoisseur and delight their senses with exquisite flavors and handpicked wines from Greece on Monsieur Didot’ s terrace.
Finally, the team of Monsieur Didot has compiled a set of recommendations for the best restaurants, bistros and cocktail bars in the neighborhood (and there are many of them) and in Athens in general, so guests can avoid tourist traps.
Is Monsieur Didot best suited for couples, families, groups? What’s your policy on kids?
Monsieur Didot is a friendly place for all kinds of travellers, except large groups (over 16 persons), because of its small size. Couples are accommodated in double rooms and suites, families can stay in the suites, and larger families or small groups (up to 7 persons) can book the whole first floor of the residence and privately use the sitting area on that floor.
Larger groups (up to 16 persons) can book the whole residence (4 double rooms, 2 suites, an indoor sitting area on the first floor and an open-air terrace on the second floor) and really feel like a good friend hosts them in his home in Athens.
Regarding kids, Monsieur Didot loves their presence here. We provide baby cots, extra sofa-beds in the suites, toys, drawing kits, baby seats, baby linen and special gifts on the family’s check-out. Kids up to 12 years old are not charged throughout the whole year, 12-18 years old are not charged from October to April.
Monsieur Didot welcomes guests in 4 rooms and 2 suites governed by luxurious simplicity and an overriding feel of elegance. Its architectural characteristics take center stage and subtle references to the “all-time classic” aesthetic of “old Athens” shape the personality of each space.
With names inspired by poetry and prose, each room and suite has a unique story to tell, bringing the city’s history back to life in a very special way while simultaneously relating to the concept of Monsieur Didot. On the ground floor of the building, the suites “The Tale” — with its own independent entrance — and “Τhe Novel” can host up to 3 and 4 guests each.
The imposing wooden stairway, which instantly draws in the gaze of those who enter, leads to the first floor, and a cozy lounge around which the rooms “Τhe Ballad”, “The Sonnet” and “Τhe Anthem” are situated. Some of the building’s most beautiful elements can be found in both.
The large window in “The Ballad” has a view of the atmospheric sidewalk and the bustling day-to-day of Kolonaki. “The Anthem” luxuriates in the privilege of enjoying the only balcony in the entire building. The marble fireplace in “The Sonnet” always inspires waves of admiration and its large wooden bookcase, which hides a secret doorway to the bathroom, adds a quintessential touch of interior design. The first floor is also ideal for large families and groups because it can be booked in its entirety to host groups of 6 or 7 in complete privacy.
The building’s rooftop is a true ode to light with its room “Τhe Ode” standing out with its open space and modern layout. Its wide, metal-framed windows and a private terrace make up an urban setting that bewitches visitors.
Finally, the rooftop hosts a cozy terrace, where visitors can have their breakfast or coffee on a sunny day, or a drink or glass of wine on warm nights.
Located on the ground floor and with its own entrance from a leafy pedestrian street, this cosy suite is Monsieur Didot’s favourite child!

Monsieur Didot’s guests enjoy a truly homely atmosphere. The rooms are equipped with modern facilities and amenities so guests feel that they are in their own homes. Due to the small size of the hotel, guests enjoy personal and warm contact with the staff, which aims to satisfy any special requests and needs of the guests.
Monsieur Didot wants to become the traveler’s acquaintance and communication channel with the city of Athens. He knows that modern travelers want to get to know their destination in-depth, to taste, to enjoy, to explore and to have authentic memories and a holistic hospitality experience.
Monsieur Didot is a small guest house, so there are no activities offered in-house. However, guests can schedule a variety of activities with the help of our concierge desk.
From cultural walks to day trips and culinary gems, such as vineyard tours, food & wine tours, bike tours, as well as diving, cruising, trekking, hammam (and spa) experiences, dance lessons, street culture tours, cooking lessons, sailing experiences, cruises, Athens riviera tours, as well as day trips to sightseeing far away from Athens.
The team of Monsieur Didot provides all the information about museums, restaurants, bars, sightseeing, theatres, events in a printed guide that awaits the guests in the room. Guests can buy it on check-out and have it as a souvenir for what they have experienced in Athens.
Monsieur Didot is located in the beating heart of Athens, nonetheless in a quiet spot in Kolonaki (on the corner of Sina & Didotou Streets, with the second being a pedestrian zone). Just five minutes from the “Panepistimio” metro station, the home is surrounded by theatres, museums, publishing houses and historic bookstores, as well as countless cafés, bars, restaurants and boutiques belonging to some of Europe’s largest fashion houses.
Monsieur Didot’s house is also the perfect setting from which to explore all the city offers on foot – ancient sightseeing as well as modern attractions.
Monsieur Didot has the privilege of being located at the border of two extremely different yet genuinely characteristic districts of modern Athens.
Kolonaki, an aristocratic district on the one side, and Exarchia, a vibrant, hip and alternative area of the city on the other. Monsieur Didot’s DNA encompasses cultural and philosophical elements from both of these districts, beautifully combined to create a harmonious entity.
Functioning once as a gathering space for artists and intellectuals, Kolonaki established itself as one of the most sought-after locations in Athens. Its mesmerising neoclassical buildings, together with its social and artistic flair, made Kolonaki one of the city’s most beautiful quarters. Its aristocratic character is partly due to its proximity to the former Royal Palace, which attracted the social grandeur during the Greek Monarchy. Today, Kolonaki retains its historic and unique character but has also grown into a commercial centre. It is here where one can enjoy the most refined shops in Athens and all the renowned fashion houses along with multiple cafés, bars and restaurants.
Exarchia, and in particular the quarter of Neapolis, can be defined as the birthplace of letters and culture in the area. All the greats of Greek art and letters lived and excelled here and it established a reputation as the home of the bohemian intellectual, who would flood the multitude of art cafés, and printing and publishing houses. It is to this day still home to the offices of large publishing houses whilst many small printing offices, resisting the passing of time, can also be found hidden in its streets.
The area of Exarchia is renowned for its youthful vibrancy and a hint of alternative and hipster culture which is illustrated by an array of restaurants, cafés and bars that fill the streets, while there are also an abundance of alternative events and exhibitions.
Athens is a city for all seasons. It combines so many things, so if you come in a particular season, you will understand that you will have to come back another time to experience it all. The weather is fine, sunny for 9 months of the year and the climate is perfect. In the winter, a visitor will avoid the sightseeing queues, but he will miss the riviera. In the summer, he will get a little hot, but he will be happy to experience a day-cruise to the nearest islands, a sailing tour or a tour to the Athenian riviera. So, in conclusion, visitors must come to Athens at least twice!
