Casa Lamarosa
Designed in a minimalist style, Casa Lamarosa is a historic rural residence in the Portuguese village of Lamarosa. It features three bedrooms, a plunge pool and an enchanting walled garden.
There’s always a “wow” factor when you enter the cabins as they have huge windows overlooking the surrounding nature.
What is the story behind Monte das Casolas, what was your inspiration?
I worked in big companies on the finance side of things for some time. But I have a degree in agriculture and always had a dream of getting back to the countryside. I didn’t want to finish my life in the city.
So I started looking for land in Portugal. I wanted it to be close enough to Lisbon (within an hour) and not far from the ocean. On the third viewing, we got lucky and found the perfect place — a 22-hectare property with rolling hills, an old, ruined house and very nice views.
I knew that I didn’t want a holiday home but rather a business, with self-catering houses and a yoga shala (at the time I was taking a yoga teacher training course). I had a dream of making a retreat centre, so the business had to meet a lot of criteria. I applied for EU funds and worked with an architect and consultant on the project.
The property was beautiful and unspoiled. It had been abandoned for 50 years, so there was no plastic in the soil. I wanted the new construction to be as respectful to the environment as possible, so I opted for pre-fabricated structures that wouldn’t disturb the trees. In this part of Portugal, the acorn and cork trees are protected. We worked with a Portuguese company and created these white wooden cabins with low roofs in keeping with traditional Alentejo architecture.
In total, we created five cabins, all of which have three bedrooms and are around 100 square metres, so they are ideal for families. Each is immersed in nature and very peaceful. We orientated each in different directions, so you don’t see your neighbours, and there’s a sense of privacy and isolation, even though they’re not far away. The cabins are ideal for groups who want their own privacy while staying at the same property.
We also rebuilt the ruined house and a stone animal shelter, creating a memory of what once was. From one of the bigger animal shelters, we made a yoga shala, although it’s multi-use and can be used for yoga or parties. One of the key factors in tourism is you have to be flexible to clients’ needs! From the yoga shala, there is a beautiful view of the sunrise and the pool.
Adjacent to the yoga shala is Casa do Alpendre, another house that can be rented privately or used for retreats. It has a big living room where guests can dine and socialise — it works in parallel with the shala.
With Covid, construction delays and the speed of Portuguese planning approvals, it took some time to get everything completed. But since opening in January 2024, I have received wonderful feedback from everyone who visits.
How would you describe the atmosphere and the interior design of Monte das Casolas?
There’s always a “wow” factor when you enter the cabins as they have huge windows overlooking the surrounding nature. There is this element of surprise upon entry and each cabin has a slightly different view. Each of the cabins is very comfortable to ensure guests enjoy their stay.
In terms of interior design, I worked with an artist who does paintings and pottery and we finished with a very pure, almost Nordic design aesthetic. I wanted it to be simple, minimalist and comfortable, with spots of colour in the bedroom linen and plates. I think we have achieved that.
To you personally, what is so special about Monte das Casolas?
For me, the views are magical. I think the distribution of the houses offers privacy, but at the same time, you are not alone, which can feel scary for some people. It’s the perfect blend of isolation but with a friendly neighbour in a beautiful landscape.
We have five cabins, each positioned along the property’s southern road and facing southwest to east. The east one is ideal for early birds who like to watch the sunrise. I try to get an idea of the type of guests who are coming and select the best cabin for them.
From the wooden landing, you enter the cabin’s lobby, which leads to two bedrooms and a big living room with an open-plan kitchen. There is a fireplace for the wintertime as we have lots of acorn tree branches on the property and it gives a really nice warmth to the cabins.
Across from the living room is the master bedroom, which is wheelchair accessible. Of the five cabins, only one is not accessible by wheelchair as we had to put steps at the entrance. It’s further away than the rest of the cabins and many people like this one as it feels a little more remote.
The living room connects to a wooden deck with an outdoor table and sitting area overlooking the property. There are stairs leading from the deck down into the surrounding nature and there is a shower outside so you can rinse off if you’re coming from the beach.
We rebuilt the ruined house in a traditional Alentejo style, with marble countertops and cooked clay tiles. As was common, it is located on the top of the hill, from where the occupants could keep an eye on their cattle. In total, it has five bedrooms - two in the white house and three in the stone section.
The walls are very thick, so it doesn’t need air-conditioning and, like traditional Portuguese houses, we have reduced the number of windows to protect from the summer heat. Inside, there is a fireplace and floor heating so it’s very comfortable in the winter, while the outside patio has a long marble table where you can dine in the warmer months.
Adjacent to the yoga shala is Casa do Alpendre, which is a new construction inspired by a traditional house. That being said, the windows are a little bigger than normal, offering views across the pool. We used traditional Alentejo materials such as white marble and cooked clay tiles in the design.
Casa do Alpendre is located next to the Alpendre, the communal living space. It is the ideal house for group meetings. It has a large living room with a 10-seater dining table and a wood-burning stove. On the outdoor patio, a spacious marble table can seat up to 16 people, making it perfect for social gatherings and al fresco dining.
The house has a kitchen with an oven, dishwasher, fridge/freezer, hob, microwave, coffee machine, kettle and toaster, and the spacious living room offers a comfortable table and a seating area with a wood-burning stove.
There are three en-suite bedrooms with double beds (180x200cm) or twin beds (the beds can be separated in each room on request). The bathrooms are equipped with a shower, washbasin and toilet.
Casas do Monte, featuring two bedrooms, retains its typical Alentejo architecture and includes a wood oven and a converted animal shelter annex with an additional three bedrooms. The master bedroom features a king-size bed (2m x 2m) and offers direct access to the patio. The living room and open kitchen, adorned with white marble countertops and a central island, create an inviting space for family gatherings, whether around the fireplace in winter or on the outdoor patio with its marble table in summer. Additionally, there is a smaller ensuite bedroom adjacent to the living room.
Across the entrance patio lies a black stone house with three bedrooms. One bedroom is ensuite, while the other two share a bathroom. This house also features access to a south-facing outdoor patio with a round marble table, perfect for admiring the sunset.

A Casola boasts a fully equipped kitchen where you can prepare mouth-watering meals using locally sourced ingredients, and the spacious living room provides comfortable seating to relax and unwind. The living room also has direct access to the deck, which offers a delightful outdoor space with an inviting table and cozy lounge area. Here, you can admire the stunning views or the impressive starry sky and soak up the warm, refreshing sunshine.
Additionally, all Casolas have access to a round communal swimming pool, offering a refreshing way to cool off and enjoy the beautiful weather.

Casa do Alpendre serves as a common space where people can find me if they need recommendations or assistance. It means I am not disturbing them or intruding on their space. I can arrange for a breakfast pick-up here and there are board games/books for children to use.
We offer a morning yoga class before breakfast and extra cleaning is available on request. The houses are self-catering but if guests want grocery shopping done before their arrival, it’s possible for a surcharge.
The swimming pool is round (16 metres in diameter) and is not heated. It’s central to all of the cabins and designed to feel like entering the sea. It’s almost white with sandy concrete and no rails.
Originally, I wanted to make a dam and a natural pool but not everyone likes frogs and plants! The landscape architects convinced me to make a more traditional pool and that’s how we ended up with a round one. There is some natural shade available beneath the surrounding trees.
In Comporta, there are lots of boutique shops and wonderful restaurants, including fine dining options. In the Sado River, you can go dolphin watching, which I would highly recommend. Sometimes you can see dolphins from the beach when they go out to fish but there is a much better chance of seeing them if you go on a cruise.
Also nearby are the golf courses of Troia and Carvalhal and opportunities to go horseback riding. In the summertime, it’s too hot for hiking. But in the shoulder seasons, there are lots of trails to explore. There are also several lagoons offering good birdwatching.
I am also a certified yoga teacher and yoga classes can be arranged on request. We have several hiking routes very close and can give some advice to guests. We can arrange bike rentals, boat trips, horseback riding at the beach etc.
We are 10 minutes south of Grândola — a typical Alentejo town with three supermarkets, plus lots of local shops for buying meat, fish and vegetables. Lisbon is one hour away and can easily be visited on a day trip.
Within around half an hour, you can be at the coast. From Comporta, there is a long line of pristine beaches stretching south to choose from.
There is a restaurant around five kilometres away that I always recommend to guests. You can hike there in the morning, have lunch, then come back. In Grândola, there are several traditional restaurants (10 minutes away) and fine-dining options can be found in Comporta (30 minutes away). Cavalariça is one of my favourites. Around 15 minutes away is Sublime in Muda. There’s a whole range of restaurants available nearby.
In summer, you have the heat and the sun and the beaches — it’s always a crowd-pleaser. Spring is beautiful as the landscapes turn green and the temperatures are mild, ideal for hiking. It’s one of my favourite seasons as it’s the rebirth of everything.
In autumn, the temperatures are not so hot but it can still be warm enough to go to the beach and swim in September and October. The restaurants remain open and you can go hiking. It’s like a mini summer!
If you live in a place with very cold winters, I would also recommend visiting in winter as we still have temperatures around 10/15° Celsius. For some, it feels like summer!
