An introduction to Palais Gentile

What’s the story behind Palais Gentile and what was your inspiration to open it?

Originally we are from Italy and France and after having lived in several European countries we decided to look for a destination where we could enjoy the sun, the beach, the food and simply having a happy and authentic life. We chose the Salento, an incredible region in Puglia, to start our story!

The idea was originally to build a family house where we could meet, celebrate and have fun with family and friends. Then we decided to not only keep this Palazzo for us but to open it to anyone who shares our values. The renovation of the Palais took one year and we did our best to keep all the original stones and materials to retain the authenticity of the house. We worked with local artisans to bring their savoir-faire, we also added our personal touch with an elegant vintage decoration and an art collection.

How would you describe the atmosphere and the interior design of Palais Gentile?

The Palazzo was renovated with respect to the original architecture using the ‚pietra leccese’ stone from the region and keeping the cement tiles. You will find design touches thanks to small black metal tables, lights made by a local artisan, all balanced with local pieces such as stools and carpets.

To you personally, what is so special about Palais Gentile?

We are away from the touristic places in the heart of a humble city, it is the perfect place to explore Puglia in the most authentic way. You could enjoy the gourmet cuisine at Foscolo restaurant across the street or enjoy a cocktail with sushi made in Salento. Palais Gentile is a destination to live the local life and taste the local cuisine.

Is Palais Gentile best suited for couples, families, groups? What’s your policy on kids?

The Palais is suitable for both couples and families. The suites are perfect for families as we can accommodate 4 persons. Kids under 12 years stay free of charge.

We can also privatize the Palazzo for groups of up to 12 people and organize special experiences and small events like a birthday or family reunion. If the guests want a private chef, massages, transfers or experiences to explore Puglia the way they like, no problem!

Verfied Welcome Beyond stay
We had a very good time at Palais Gentile. Located in a quiet section of Matino this small Guest House with only 4 rooms is perfect to relax and start your trips in South-Puglia. In the evening for the sunset and in the morning for breakfast you can enjoy the roof terrace of the house with a very nice view to the sea, to Gallipoli and sometimes also to Calabria. The hosts Carolina and Aurelien are always there to help and support you during your stay. Moreover we got a lot insider tips where to go for dinner and what to visit in Salento. Overall we can 100% recommend this guesthouse if you are interested in a local and not that touristic place to stay. Rooms are very clean, service is fantastic and breakfast is local and fresh.

The location of Palais Gentile

Palais Gentile is located in Matino, an authentic Puglian village in the countryside. We are right in the old town, which offers the best of the Salento region in Puglia at your doorstep.

In addition to the proximity of Gallipoli, you are just 15 minutes from one of the most beautiful beaches of Italy, Lido Pizzo & Baia Verde.

The village is 45 minutes from the magnificent Baroque city Lecce and 2 hours from Alberobello and Matera. The airport of Brindisi is 1 hour and the airport of Bari is 2 hours away.

This part of Puglia is less known than the Itria Valley near Ostuni, so it is less touristy in May, June, July and September. You can explore the unknown Puglia. For all lovers of beautiful sandy beaches, this is where you want to be! The beaches are really nice and you could compare some of the beaches with the Maldives…

When is the best time to visit Puglia?

Our recommendation is to come in April, May, June, July, September or October. We don’t recommend coming in August as the demand from the Italians is very high and it is difficult to explore the region in a relaxing way. All months from April to October offer nice weather and are perfect to explore the region the way you like.
