Casa Modesta
Our secret: a family house opening its doors to tourism in an almost unknown land, facing the sea and in the heart of the Ria Formosa Nature Park, considered one of Portugal's seven wonders.
There is something truly magical about being at the heart of the Ria Formosa where the colors shift with each passing hour.
What is the story behind Quinta da Eira?
The story with Quinta da Eira began with our deep love for this unique region. We already own a beautiful beach house nearby, which was designed by Frederico Valsassina – the same architect who later worked on the renovation of Quinta da Eira. The Ria Formosa, one of the 'Seven Natural Wonders of Portugal,' captivated us with its unparalleled beauty and the ever-changing hues of its wetlands.
Together we have five children, and the thought crossed our minds that maybe one day, when they have families of their own, our beach house might be too small to host everyone. When we stumbled upon this charming 19th-century farm, we instantly fell in love and began dreaming of a place where each of our five children could have their own space – there are five unique houses on the property.
What started as a simple idea quickly turned into a passionate project. Initially, we never planned to rent out Quinta da Eira, let alone host retreats. But the more time we spent here, the stronger our desire grew to share this special place with others.
After leaving my career as a member of the editor board of a Dutch newspaper, where I worked for 30 years, I suddenly found myself organizing all sorts of retreats. Meanwhile, my husband had just sold his company and was heading a new chapter in his life. The farm became our mutual source of joy.
Last summer, we invited friends and family to "test" the property for us, and it was so much fun to share it with them. They were enamoured with the aesthetics, the tranquillity, and sense of history that permeates the Quinta. The life here turned out exactly as we had envisioned.
We’ve noticed that guests often arrive with many plans, but most end up staying at the property, just reading, relaxing, and soaking up the atmosphere. Quinta da Eira feels like your very own 19th-century village, with its small alleyways, rooftop terraces, and secret nooks.
This summer 2024 we are officially open to welcome guests, offering the option to rent individual houses or the entire property.
How would you describe the atmosphere and the interior design?
Our vision for Quinta da Eira was brought to life with the invaluable help of interior architect Marta Valsassina, who works alongside her father, Frederico. Marta has great expertise in preserving and renovating the traditional style of the Algarve. And she has a keen eye for detail. The result is a blend of authentic charm and understated luxury, using high-end materials and equipment. Guests absolutely rave about the beds!
When we acquired the property, it was fully furnished with a treasure trove of collectables from the previous owner — it felt like stepping into a museum. The barn was filled with vintage agricultural tools, and what is now our gym housed a collection of antique toys. We preserved much of the original furniture, integrating these pieces throughout the houses, which adds a unique atmosphere and a palpable sense of history to each casa.
To you personally, what is so special about the farm?
There is something truly magical about being at the heart of the Ria Formosa where the colors shift with each passing hour. It reminds me of those old-fashioned jawbreaker candies that constantly change colour as you savour them. The Ria is like that — ever-changing, ever-enchanting. To us, it is pure magic.
There are five separate Casas, each with a terrace garden, two with roof terraces and one with a patio and mini pool. While separate, the houses are located in one building, plus there’s an outside kitchen. We turned the old water tank into a swimming pool (8.30 x 8.10m) and in the future, we will have a second pool. In total, we have 13 bedrooms and can accommodate up to 26 guests.
Our most intimate and charming residence, Casa da Eira features two bedrooms and a shared bathroom, complemented by a fully equipped kitchen. Nestled beside the old farm distillery, its secluded terrace offers a tranquil spot to relax. Conveniently located near the pool, Casa da Eira ensures both comfort and accessibility.

We have two cleaners at the property, so the beds are made and the kitchens are cleaned each day. Sheets are changed twice a week. Breakfast can be arranged on request and we have a grocery service for guest arrivals. Although we don’t really advertise it, we often provide snacks and juices for people when they relax by the pool.
And in the months of July and August a chef will cook each night for guests who wish to eat at the quinta. It is not included. The rest of the year we can arrange on request a chef.
Our neighbours (30 minutes’ walk from the property) organise kayaking tours of the lagoon which are incredible! The blue water against the white sand and the birds — it really is something special. There are no waves, so you feel safe and with no risk of getting lost.
Quinta da Eira is situated along the Rota da Costa Atlântica, a coastal bike trail that also serves as a wonderful hiking trail. If you are a golfer, you are in the right place, with many beautiful courses in the area. I’d also recommend guests visit some of the nearby towns, such as Tavira, Santa Luzia and Olhão.
The surroundings Quinta da Eira is situated in the protected natural area of Parque Natural da Ria Formosa. This unique lagoon encompasses small islands, sandbanks, and dunes, creating an ideal sanctuary for bird enthusiasts. Spanning from Faro to the Spanish border, the region is peppered with picturesque towns and villages such as Fuseta, Olhão (famous for its bustling covered market offering fresh fish and local produce), Santa Luzia, Tavira, and Cacela Velha.
Cycling & Hiking Located along the coastal bike trail known as Rota da Costa Atlântica, the property offers easy access to stunning coastal views. During low tide, visitors can explore the lagoon on foot, while the bike path also serves as an excellent hiking route.
Boat trips Boat tours depart from Fuseta, Tavira, Santa Luzia, and Olhão, offering opportunities to spot seals and seahorses.
Kayaks / Paddleboarding / Horseback riding The lagoon is perfect for kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and horseback riding.
Kitesurfing Near Tavira in Cabanas de Tavira, visitors can take kitesurfing lessons and rent equipment.
Golf The Algarve region is renowned for its top-tier golf courses, several of which are within a 30-minute drive. Benamor offers a pleasant and moderately challenging course, Quinta da Ria/Quinta da Cima features beautiful courses overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, and Monte Rei, set slightly inland, is celebrated for its stunning layout.
The farm is 10 minutes’ walk from the Ria Formosa lagoon and on higher tides, you can enter the lagoon directly with a kayak or paddleboard from here. On lower tides, you need to enter from the dock nearby.
The restaurants of Santa Luzia and the beach of Barril are 10 minutes away by car while Tavira is around 15 minutes. The area is ideal for biking because there is a beautiful cycling path, the Rota da Costa Atlântica, that leads all the way to Spain. The closest beaches can be reached in five minutes by car or 15 minutes by bicycle. They are all family-friendly.
The lagoon Just a short 5-10 minute walk from the farm, you'll discover the tranquil lagoon. There are excellent swimming spots near the piers, and across the water lies a beautiful, secluded beach accessible only by kayak or boat. Don't forget to bring a picnic and an umbrella for your adventure.
Barril Beach A quaint little train takes you to Barril Beach, or you can enjoy a leisurely 15-minute stroll across the Ria. Nearby, there's also a nudist beach.
Fuseta Beach Praia da Fuseta, a charming small beach nestled in the heart of Fuseta, is beloved by families with young children. It features an onsite restaurant and offers paddleboarding rentals.
Fuseta Island Beach This beach, opposite Fuseta, can be reached by ferry or water taxi. Although the boarding area might seem busy, a short walk will reveal a stunning and mostly secluded beach, complete with sunbeds and a cozy restaurant for lunch.
Ilha de Tavira Beach Located on the eastern end of Tavira Island, Ilha de Tavira Beach is accessible by ferry or water taxi from Tavira. It boasts numerous loungers, beach umbrellas, and plenty of charming restaurants.
Every time I visit, I think: “This is the best season!” April and May are very pretty because everything is still green and all the flowers are blooming. In October/November, it can be surprisingly warm. I also like the summer but it can be a bit crowded in the restaurants.
