Psacharopoulos House
Psacharopoulos House is an authentic and historic holiday villa built during the middle of the 19th century.
Completely isolated from traffic and noise, yet within walking distance of Sifnos’ main village.
How would you describe Sifnos Retreat in a nutshell?
Sifnos Retreat is a collection of three traditional barns that have been restored with respect to the island’s vernacular architecture. It’s a minimalist take on Sifnian design, with modern amenities for a comfortable stay.
Completely isolated from traffic and noise, it’s the perfect place for large groups to reconnect, all within walking distance of Sifnos’ main village, Apollonia. From the property, there are wonderful views across the Sifnean countryside.
What was your inspiration to create Sifnos Retreat? What is the story behind it?
We are a Greek family of four who live between Greece and the Netherlands. While we have travelled and explored all over the world, our hearts are in Sifnos. We have been visiting the island for the past 30 years.
In creating Sifnos Retreat, we wanted to build an eco-friendly property, using local materials, local builders and a design that respected the island’s existing architecture. Each of the houses is constructed from stone and has a traditional bioclimatic design. This ensures an ideal atmosphere both day and night.
To you personally, what makes Sifnos Retreat so special?”
I think it’s a combination of the beautiful architecture, the modern amenities and the proximity of the property to Apollonia and nearby beaches.
Sifnos Retreat comprises three houses, the first of which is built in a traditional Sifnean style. The main house has a surface area of 140 square metres. It features four bedrooms - two double rooms with ensuite bathrooms and two twin rooms with a shared bathroom.
Depending on guests' needs, one of the twin rooms can be converted into a workspace. All of the bedrooms are equipped with air-conditioning, and there are fans for circulation.
Additionally, there is a spacious living room with a fully-equipped kitchen and a stone-built fireplace for the cooler months. There’s also a storage room with a washing machine and an alfresco terrace with a large dining table.
The second house is smaller (75 square metres) and features one master bedroom and another with two single beds. Both rooms have a private bathroom. There’s also a fully-equipped kitchen and a small lounge area, which can also serve as an additional sleeping area with a single bed.
Outside this house is a large pergola with a dining table and an outdoor shower sculpted into the rock face.
The third house is 45 square metres. It comprises a bedroom with a double bed and a living room with two couches, which can also serve as beds if needed. Additionally, there is a small kitchen, a bathroom and an outdoor shower built into the rocks.
In total, there are eight bedrooms (or seven bedrooms and a working space), with room to accommodate up to 16 guests.
Between the houses is a swimming pool (10x2.5 metres), an alfresco lounge area and an outdoor kitchen, complete with a traditional Sifnean barbecue.
A path leads between the second and third houses to a small hill where guests are invited to meditate or do yoga. The round stone floor resembles an ancient threshing floor, harking back to the property’s original use.
Surrounding the houses is a garden planted with Mediterranean species, such as cypress, thyme and lavender. We also have a small vineyard, olive and fig trees that guests are welcome to pick.

Aside from a washing machine and dryer, the property also has Wi-Fi throughout. We provide toiletries for guests and the kitchens are equipped with everything you need.
On request, we can arrange for dinners to be prepared by one of the best chefs on the island — previous guests have raved about this experience! Grocery deliveries can also be organised.
I’d recommend wandering through Apollonia, which is clustered with whitewashed buildings and really atmospheric. There are some great restaurants here, too.
Just east of Apollonia is Kastro, a historic village built on a steep hill overlooking the coastline. It’s also worth visiting.
A network of trails criss-crosses the island, offering unspoiled views of the Sifnean countryside. The closest beaches are around 10 minutes away by car on the island’s east coast. Many can also be reached on foot.
Sifnos is renowned for its ceramics, and there are several stores where you can pick up local pottery.
Back at the property, I’d recommend enjoying a lazy brunch on the terrace, relaxing beside the swimming pool and just soaking up the Greek sunshine.
The property is a 15-minute drive from Kamares, where ferries arrive from the Athenian port of Piraeus. It’s possible to reach Sifnos Retreat with a small car, although we would recommend parking five minutes away and walking through the village, as it is a really pleasant experience.
The centre of Apollonia is around 10 to 15 minutes’ walk from the property. Here you’ll find several restaurants and supermarkets.
July and August are the most popular months on Sifnos — this is when it’s busiest on the island. But for me, May, June and September are the most beautiful months. I would recommend anytime from March onwards as the island is green and flourishing.
