Masseria Petrarolo
A farmhouse turned luxury vacation rental, Masseria Petrarolo in Puglia combines rustic warmth with elegance. Nine bedrooms in the villa and pool house are set in olive and citrus groves.
The trullo exudes a sense of calm and relaxation.
How would you describe the trullo in a nutshell?
Trullo Fiaba is a private and unique villa that combines the characteristics of trulli with contemporary touches.
What is the story behind the trullo, what was your inspiration to create it?
I work in a job that requires me to travel a lot and have stayed in many boutique hotels, with a preference for places where the attention to detail and design are high. The idea was to renovate a property in my homeland (I was born in Martina Franca) and recreate that boutique feel.
Unfortunately, I am not able to live in Puglia full-time, so the trulli are empty for much of the year. I decided to make them available to like-minded international travellers who share the same pleasure as I do in the small details. We have two villas very close to each other, the other – Trullo Cobalto – is also listed on Welcome Beyond.
How would you describe the atmosphere and interior design?
It exudes a sense of calm and relaxation. Staying there feels like you are immersed in nature but with all the comforts of a luxury accommodation with a minimalist aesthetic. It’s not pompous. It’s very down-to-earth while highlighting the characteristics of the trulli.
This was the first property I renovated and it was completed in 2020. It comprises two separate buildings that are very close to one another and share a common area with a pool, alfresco kitchen and dining space.
On the left is a typical lamia building, which has a large living area with a fireplace and TV, plus a dining space and a fully-equipped kitchen. In the living area is a sofa bed that can accommodate one adult and there is a full bathroom with a shower adjacent. From the living area, you enter one of the ensuite master bedrooms, which has a queen-size bed.
Attached to the lamia is the trullo, which is composed of six cones. Here you’ll find a living space with a kitchenette, a stone sofa and a fireplace that acts as a conversation area. Adjacent is a service bathroom with a shower.
To the right is another ensuite master bedroom with a cone ceiling, plus a large wardrobe, desk and TV. To the left of the living room is another bedroom with two twin beds (which can become a double) and this room has independent access to the courtyard.
On the backside of the trullo are the swimming pool (5x10 metres) and jacuzzi, plus several sunbathing lounges and an alfresco dining area. There is a fully-equipped outdoor kitchen with a barbecue and a wood-fired oven, as well as a bathroom and an outdoor shower. Next to the pool is an outdoor living space that enjoys panoramic views across the valley.
The trullo is equipped with smart home technology, as well as air-conditioning and heating throughout. Children of all ages are welcome.
Rates include all linen, pool cleaning (twice a week) and the final clean, although mid-week cleaning is available for an additional charge. We have a strong connection with a local concierge service who can organise a variety of in-villa activities, such as yoga, massages and private dining, as well as tours and excursions in the surrounding area.
Based on feedback from our guests, one of the most popular activities is the in-villa cooking class. You will learn how to make homemade pasta with the help of a local chef, then get to eat your delicious dinner. Private yoga and pilates classes are also popular.
In addition to spending time by the pool, I would recommend a couple of days on the coast as the beach clubs are very nice. You should also take time to explore some of the towns in the valley and have dinner at one of the masserias nearby.
We can also organise horse riding excursions on the beach and bike tours — you can cycle forever through the valley accompanied by superb views.
Trullo Fiaba is located in the Valle d’Itria. It’s one of the most sought-after areas of the valley, with a number of luxury homes nearby. Martina Franca is around five minutes’ drive from the property while Ostuni is roughly 15 minutes away.
Although the towns are all very close to one another, you definitely need a car to travel around the area. The Adriatic coast with its beach clubs is around 30 minutes away while the Ionian coast with its beautiful beaches is a 50 minutes’ drive.
We have a mini-market that is just two minutes by car (or a 20-minute walk) and it has a restaurant next door. The closest supermarket is in Martina Franca.
July and August are the most popular months to visit but my favourite time would be May/June or September/October. It’s less crowded in the towns and the weather is still nice, without being super hot.
We stay open throughout the low season, which attracts far fewer people, and it could be an out-of-the-box Christmas or New Year’s destination. We usually open the pool (which isn’t heated) around the week before Easter and don’t close it again until the end of October.
