An introduction to Villa Aleomandra

How would you describe Villa Aleomandra in a nutshell?

Villa Aleomandra is an oasis in Mykonos with its own private beach and all the facilities you would expect of a high-end Cycladic house. It feels remote, with a beautiful garden and sunset views, but is within walking distance of several towns, restaurants and beaches.

What is the story behind Villa Aleomandra, what was your inspiration to create it?

I bought the land in 1998 when there was nothing in the area. I was impressed by the magical sunsets and the views of Delos, an ancient island with strong energy.

We started doing the plans and landscaping in 2006 and completed the house in 2009. It was originally intended as a family house, with just four bedrooms, but over the years, I have expanded it to include six bedrooms. However, it doesn’t feel like a big house because all of the rooms are spread across the 900-square-metre site.

How would you describe the atmosphere and interior design of Villa Aleomandra?

We renovated the house in 2020 to create more of an international/Miami design aesthetic while retaining the Cycladic feel of the exterior and garden. The landscape is very Greek, with herbs like rosemary and oregano planted alongside olive trees, from which we make our own olive oil.

To you personally, what is so special about Villa Aleomandra?

It’s special to me because I put a lot of time into building and designing the property. It’s been a place where our family has made lots of beautiful memories with friends and where we’ve watched the children grow up.

I also love it because there is always something to do, both day and night, so you don’t have to go anywhere if you don’t want to. Sailing boats and ferries are always moving through the passage in front of the house and I like to sit out on the verandah just enjoying the views and the sea. The light is also very beautiful and you have the garden around you — this is what makes it an oasis.

Villa Aleomandra rooms & rates

From the parking area, a staircase leads down to the villa and you enter through a large door into the living room. It has high ceilings and a big sofa, with a verandah on the left-hand side that offers sea views. Also on this level is the master bedroom with an ensuite bathroom, shower and jacuzzi, as well as a walk-in closet, office and private outdoor sitting area.

On the other side of the living room is the kitchen, which connects to a backyard area where you can have breakfast while being protected from the sun and wind. In front of the kitchen are two big tables that can seat up to 20 people for lunch or dinner. Outside the living area, we also have an outdoor cinema where you can watch movies or Netflix on the wall in the evenings.

On the top floor of the main building are two guest rooms with ensuite bathrooms while on the lower level is a huge TV room with a games table, a gym, a laundry and another bedroom.

From the car park, you can also see the loft-style guesthouse that can accommodate up to four people and has a huge bathroom. Behind this residence, we also have a smaller guesthouse in the garden where the olive trees are.
If you walk down through the landscaped gardens from the main house, you arrive at the swimming pool, which has a bar, outdoor showers and an entertainment area. As you continue towards the sea, there’s a gate that leads down to the sandy beach, which is private for the house. We have daybeds and an umbrella that guests can use. A short walk to the left takes you to a larger beach.

Mykonos is renowned for its beaches where you can swim and socialise during the day, as well as its nightclubs. But there are also great museums, boutique shops and excellent restaurants. Many guests like to take boat tours to explore the surrounding coastline and islands.

The location of Villa Aleomandra

The good thing about Villa Aleomandra is that it’s not far and it’s not close. We are on a peninsula in an area of Mykonos that feels like an island on the island. In 20 minutes, you can walk to the restaurants and boutiques of Mykonos Town while the airport is around a 15 minutes drive from the property. Closer is the village of Ornos, which is just a 10 minutes walk away if you want to buy a newspaper or fresh fish from the market. Surrounding the villa are mostly upmarket residences and a few hotels, as well as several high-end restaurants.

The location offers extreme privacy plus some of the most enviable sunsets on Mykonos. This peninsula is the closest land point to the sacred island of Delos, and has picturesque views of this and other nearby Cycladic islands.

When is the best time to visit Mykonos?

I love May, June and September — up until October is beautiful. July/August is a more social period on Mykonos but because the house feels like an oasis, you don’t really notice it. We don’t rent Villa Aleomandra between November and April because this is the time we do renovations and prepare the house for the following season.
