An introduction to Villa Mirage

What was your inspiration to create Villa Mirage? What is the story behind it?

As a Swedish family, we have travelled often to the south of France. In Sweden, it is quite dark in the winter months and we thought: “Should we buy a house in Sweden or a simple apartment and a house somewhere warmer to spend the winter?” So we started looking at places in southern Europe and fell in love with this area — the culture, the language, the food.

We found this property by accident after another couple decided not to go forward with their purchase. We bought it two years ago and have spent the time since renovating it. Set within a nature reserve, the villa was designed by a local architect (her house is a few hundred metres away) and it once formed part of an agricultural property with olive trees. It’s a classic Provençal house and when we bought it, it was empty.

What is nice about the property is that it has a 7,000-square-metre natural garden (it hasn’t been altered) and there is no fence — this is unique in France. Because of the surrounding forest, you don’t see your neighbours. Instead, you have a small view of the sea on one side and a view toward Saint-Paul-de-Vence on the other. Saint-Paul-de-Vence is a well-preserved medieval town and attracted a lot of artists in the 1940s.

How would you describe the atmosphere and interior design?

At Villa Mirage, you are surrounded by nature and the garden, so there is a lot of natural light. Every room has a really spacious feel — it’s light and fresh. When I’m there, I feel calm. If you wake up and it has been raining, you can smell the fragrance from the plants. It feels open and like you are the only one there as you can’t see the neighbours.

Our interior inspiration was to keep the simplicity that we have in Scandinavian design but combine it with a French-Provençal style. During the renovations, we used natural materials, such as stone, travertine and oak, and created an open design that connected the interior to the garden.

I would describe the interior as modern-classic — everything is natural and premium. Each bedroom is architecturally unique and spacious, with a balcony or terrace leading outdoors. All of the appliances are modern but there’s a classic look, with a farmhouse dining table and a stone island breakfast bar.

We have an Iranian background and I think there’s also an Oriental flavour, particularly in the garden. It reminds me of Persian gardens - natural but with character. The property as a whole combines elements of Persian landscaping with French-Provençal design and a Swedish minimalistic lifestyle.

To you personally, what's so special about Villa Mirage?

I think it’s the garden and the location — that’s why we fell in love with it. It’s really quiet but if you want action, you’re just a short drive away. The placement of the house is really nice. We also love coming home to the views — there’s a sense of the outside coming in that feels healthy and sustainable. It’s not like an old-school summer house — it’s really comfortable and everything is working!

Villa Mirage rooms & rates

Villa Mirage is actually two houses — an old one and a new one — that are connected by a corridor of glass windows. Usually, Provençal houses have the living area on the top and the bedrooms downstairs, but this is predominantly on one level.

You enter into a hallway that connects to the kitchen and living area on the left. To the right is the first bedroom, which has a division between the sleeping area and the bathroom but with an open ceiling. Double doors lead from here to the terrace and there’s a separate toilet.

From the living room and kitchen, there are also doors connecting to the terrace. Steps lead down from here to the older part of the house, which is where you’ll find the second bedroom (it has a big bathroom) and the third bedroom (the smallest in the house). Both have doors leading out to the terrace where you’ll find the swimming pool (9x3.5 metres and not heated). It feels like it’s part of the garden and is only lightly chlorinated.

Things to do in Cote d'Azur & La Colle-sur-Loup

  • Art / Culture
  • Shopping / Markets
  • Night life
  • Wine tastings
  • Massages / Treatments
  • Tennis
  • Boat trips

I’d recommend visiting the Fondation Maeght, a museum of modern art overlooking Saint-Paul-de-Vence, and exploring some of the boutiques in the medieval town. Kayaking along the river is also enjoyable and if you’re visiting during the film festival in May, you can go to Cannes. It’s really busy but a nice experience. It’s also easy to spend a day in Nice, enjoying the beaches and the Promenade des Anglais.

The location of Villa Mirage

We are located along a private road in a nature reserve near Saint-Paul-de-Vence, which forms part of the French Riviera. The property is around 25 minutes’ drive from Nice Côte d'Azur Airport and 35 minutes from Cannes. Despite being so close to these major cities, Villa Mirage feels very quiet and secluded.

Around one kilometre from the property is the village of La Colle-sur-Loup where you’ll find a bakery, a grocery store and several restaurants. While the restaurants aren’t high-end, the food is still very good. There’s also a pizza food truck parked nearby. La Colle-sur-Loup can be reached in around 10 or 15 minutes on foot, so there are restaurants within walking distance.

Saint-Paul-de-Vence is five minutes away by car and has some very good restaurants, including Le Tilleul (which we particularly love and isn’t too expensive) and La Colombe d’Or. The latter is famous for its wine menu and artworks by the likes of Marc Chagall. You need to book a couple of months ahead to dine here in the summer months.

Around 10 minutes away by car is the Polygone Riviera, an open-air shopping mall with lots of brand-name stores. It’s on the way to Nice, which is where you’ll find the closest beaches. Near La Colle-sur-Loup, there is a river where you can rent kayaks for the day. As you can see, we are centrally located and it’s really easy to get to nearby attractions.

When is the best time to visit Cote d'Azur?

Between June and August is the high season, so the French Riviera is busy and it is quite hot. I prefer September/October or April/May — we have good weather and everything is green. We visited last December and it was sunny, around 15 degrees Celsius. I wouldn’t recommend visiting in January/February as this is the rainy season. In my opinion, the best time is the beginning or the end of summer.
