An introduction to Platanos Villa

How would you describe Platanos Villa in a nutshell?

Platanos Villa is a peaceful, secluded oasis that blends into a dramatic backdrop of mountains overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The house is beautifully designed for serious lounging and making the most of your getaway with loved ones.

What is the story behind Platanos Villa, what was your inspiration to create it?

Platanos Villa is the shared project of four friends/two couples with a joint passion for art, architecture and vintage design. In the summer of 2020 (when we managed to travel during the pandemic), we fell in love with the area.

During the design and build, we wanted to incorporate local materials and the colours of nature as much as possible. Constructed from stone, the house is composed of two rectangular volumes, which are integrated into the mountain slope. With the wild garden mirroring the natural flora, the house feels as though it is part of the landscape, despite its large volume.

How would you describe the atmosphere, architecture and interior design of Platanos Villa?

The architectural lines are contemporary and rigid while the interior and finishings display curved lines. Together with the different textures, this gives the house a warm and hospitable feel. Earthy shades feature in the colour palette while the bright light that is so typical of Crete makes for a warm atmosphere.

To you personally, what is so special about Platanos Villa?

The view never gets old. When staying at the villa, you feel like a king or a queen on a mountaintop and can experience beautiful summer days in complete privacy. The only sound you hear is from the occasional flock of goats or sheep that wander around the area. We like to think of it as our home away from home.

Platanos Villa rooms & rates

From the driveway, there is a large, open corridor that leads to the front door, with an orange tree next to it. You enter the house through a large, glass door and arrive in a long hallway. To the left are the bedrooms while to the right (and three small steps down) is the open-plan living room and fully-equipped kitchen.

Each bedroom has its own terrace with sea views. Bedrooms 1, 2 and 3 have king-size beds (1.80 metres) while bedroom 4 has a king and a queen-size bed (1.60 metres). Bedrooms 1 and 2 also have ensuite bathrooms with walk-in showers. Bedrooms 3 and 4 share a bathroom with a walk-in shower.

Large bay windows open out onto the terrace with its infinity pool, wooden sunbeds and wicker umbrellas, as well as a seating area that’s perfect for watching the sunset. On the side of the house, bay windows open out onto the pergola, which features a large wooden table, a barbecue and a seating area.

  • Wine tastings
  • Hiking
  • Cycling
  • Horseback riding
  • Sailing / Kayaking
  • Boat trips
  • Fishing

At the property, guests can swim in the infinity pool (9 x 3.5 metres). Bike rentals are available in Kissamos or you can go surfing, windsurfing and sailing along the coastline. Boat trips are also available, as are several hiking trails.

The closest beach is at Falassarna, which is around 15 minutes’ drive from the house. Our favourite beach is Sfinari, at the westernmost point of Crete, but we also like Ravdoucha with its small pebble beach and cosy family restaurant.

A few of our highlights we recommend are:

  • Balos Beach, which can be reached via a strenuous but beautiful hike.
  • Chania with its old Venetian harbour, shops and restaurants.
  • Driving the road through the mountains to Elafonissi Beach with its pinkish sands.

The location of Platanos Villa

Platanos Villa is situated in the countryside on the west coast of Crete, around eight minutes’ drive from the village of Platonos. It is accessible via a picturesque dirt road and is located in an area with only three other houses.

From Platanos, you can reach the beautiful beach of Falassarna in 10 minutes by car. In Platanos (and at the nearby beaches), there are plenty of seafood restaurants, as well as a gas station, a pharmacy, a small supermarket and a very good bakery where you can get a perfect latte or cappuccino. A bigger supermarket can be found in Kissamos, which is about 15 minutes’ drive from the house.

The beach of Balos, with its Caribbean-like white sands and turquoise water, is 17 kilometres away. Chania and its international airport are a one-hour drive from the house.

The western side of Crete is the least developed part of the island. There are very few large hotels or clubs and just a few typical shops selling authentic products. Those who love beautiful beaches and hiking, as well as great restaurants and the occasional cocktail bar, will enjoy discovering the charm of this part of Crete.

When is the best time to visit Crete?

In spring, Crete’s landscapes turn many shades of green and the flowers are in bloom. June to September brings warm seawater and long summer nights. There is always a sea breeze in the area, which makes the hot climate bearable. October brings milder temperatures but the sea remains warm enough for dipping.
