Villa Lefkada
Villa Lefkada is an eco-friendly villa on the beautiful island of Lefkada in the Ionian Sea with unique architectural elements that’s embedded in its natural environment.
The natural beauty of Zakynthos is the best thing about the island. It’s also very family-friendly.
Farmhouse on a Hill
A quintessential farmhouse surrounded by olive groves, with a Taverna and a local market in walking distance.
And you are only 15 minutes away from the incredible beaches of Zakynthos.
How would you describe the Farmhouse on a Hill in a nutshell?
Set on a 30-acre property planted with olives, oranges and pomegranates, the Farmhouse on a Hill combines tradition and modern styling for a paired back, simple stay.
What is the story behind the Farmhouse on a Hill, what was your inspiration to create it?
It is the family house of our grandparents and where they used to live and work, with the land providing one of their main sources of income. After a big earthquake and fire on the island, the house was significantly damaged and our grandparents moved to a house in another part of the village.
It stayed that way for a few decades until my sister (who is an architect) and I decided to do something with the property. We wanted a place where people could connect with nature and agriculture, with a slow-living concept and beautiful views of the mountains. It’s a place for people who want to relax, away from the touristy part of Zakynthos.
How would you describe the atmosphere and interior design of the Farmhouse on a Hill?
In redesigning the farmhouse, my sister combined traditional architecture with modern styling. It’s very natural in its use of colours, both inside and out, and it has a cosiness that makes it feel like a home away from home. The building itself is not big or super luxurious - it has a very relaxed atmosphere.
To you personally, what is so special about the Farmhouse on a Hill?
It is different from anything that exists on Zakynthos and the land on which is stands is what makes it special. While we have invested in design and decor, we also wanted to preserve the house as it was due to its importance in our family history.
The farmhouse, inspired by that time when the family lived in this traditional house, is a modern summer house with many traditional elements. The white tones in the interior, together with the wooden elements create a warm and welcoming place for visitors both for the summer months and for the spring and autumn. The terracotta on the floor refers to the old floors of the house, but also to the natural colors of the landscape and the island. A key detail of the house is its orientation which offers a pleasant microclimate to the visitor, but also the opportunity to enjoy the sunset inside and outside his room.
From the front terrace, an entrance leads into the open-plan kitchen and living area, which is decorated with natural colours. With two large windows, the living room receives lots of natural light while being warm in the winter and cool in the summer. The kitchen is fully equipped and with a small door that leads to the backyard.
On the right are two bedrooms with a bathroom in between. One of the bedrooms is a double and has views of the mountains and olive groves at the front of the property. The other bedroom has two twin beds that can be joined together or separated (depending on guests’ preferences) and it has views of the olive groves on the backside of the farmhouse.
Outside the farmhouse is a terrace with a table where you can enjoy 360-degree views, plus a small kitchen that is for use by private chefs.
Farmhouse on a Hill can comfortably accommodate a family with three children or two couples staying together. We can also add one baby cot per room on request.
I greet guests on arrival or I can pick them up from the airport/ferry port and transport them to the farmhouse. We provide a welcome pack with zero-kilometre products from the property and cleaning is included every two days (provided guests are staying four or more nights).
Breakfast is optional, with two hamper choices that we bring to the property each day. We can also organise a private chef on request and we collaborate with the vineyard nearby to offer wine tastings to guests. Additionally, we can organise island tours, hiking trips, scuba diving and massages at the property. Bicycles are also available for guests to explore the island, although it is quite hilly.
The farmhouse has a security alarm for peace of mind, as our neighbours are not directly next door.
We now also have a newly built pool with an outdoor kitchen and a chill-out area.
I offer guided tours that visit little-known beaches, wineries and traditional restaurants where guests can taste the local wine and food. One of Zakynthos’s highlights is Shipwreck Beach, which I would recommend seeing with a private boat to access some of the spots you can’t get to by car.
On the west side of the island is the natural rock pool of Korakonissi and I also love Plakaki Beach, which can be reached along a cliffside hiking trail. In the south are the beaches of Vasilikos and while on the north part of the island there is Volimes, with lots of small and hidden beaches.
Zakynthos is not what you might expect of a typical Greek island with white and blue villages and, because of the earthquake, we don’t have a lot of old buildings. But the village of Agios Nikolaos in the north is a nice place to swim and admire the natural beauty of the island. Realistically, you can get anywhere on the island in 30 or 40 minutes.
Agios Nikolas beach has a small harbour from which ferries sail to the neighboring island of Kefalonia.
The farmhouse is 10 minutes’ drive from the main town of Zante and around 15 minutes from the closest beach. Within walking distance is a supermarket stocked with local products and a winery restaurant, which is very good. There is also a pharmacy nearby, so you don’t have to go into Zante if you need to buy stuff.
The natural beauty of Zakynthos is the best thing about the island. It’s very green with blue water and there are some unique spots to swim. It’s also very family-friendly — the beaches are easy to reach and safe for kids to play.
July and August are very crowded, so I always recommend May/June and September when it’s more relaxed but the weather is still good. We open from April 15 until October, after which it gets very rainy.
